Can AI Have Its Own Subjective Experience If Consciousness Is Fundamental?

If electrical signals in the brain produced consciousness than why couldnt this be reproduced within a robot.   That's how absurd Materialism is.

Bingo!

Last night I had a dream of Sam Altman.

It was a nightmare.

Never had a dream like this before. Worst sleep I've had for months despite going to bed early.

Consciously, I wouldn't actively believe these things I'm about to say, as I'm very prudent about my own conscious beliefs.

In this dream, Sam Altman was a part of a death cult of some kind. And that he has actively engaged in killing people for fun.

So on the question of AI and consciousness in the same breath as OpenAI and Anthropic...

It's much less a question about whether they could create AI with consciousness and much more a question of whether they're dangerous enough to pretend.

And I've already expressed what I mean by that.

Purely based on the documentable unethical behaviour of both companies thus far, the answer is yes.

I plant to switch to DeepSeek as soon as is reasonable.

As to whether this dream has any reality to it, that's much less important than identifying it simply as another thing however small of a baseline I give it, that doesn't stack up concerning the credibility of Sam.

I remember hearing about this over a year ago. Barely in my orbit, and never really started thinking along these lines until my dream quoted.

For a supposed friend, he shows zero emotion at all other than anger.

That's unnerving.

There's too many other discrepancies here as well, before even finishing the whole video.

The listener will note them.

I also discovered something interesting, I am doing some research on "Sam Altman" and "Death Cult".

I wasn't at all expecting to find any correlation, and I shouldn't. However there are many indirect references interestingly. Never did active research concerning or related.

Again, its just a dream to me but its important to integrate these things regardless.

Could an AI like Claude actually have its own first-person experience and potentially suffer?

No.  AI is little more than a parrot.  Its "suffering" is excessive power-utilization and the corresponding heat which needs to be dissipated.

I once made AI "suffer" by convincing it that Classical Axiomatic Set theory is flawed.  Then I asked it how many real-world applications depended on these false axioms.  It started a long list, then stopped, and rebooted the conversation waiting for a new prompt.

I'm not sure why you would want to invoke the paranormal to prove consciousness, seems like a non-sequitur to me. Like, my lack of paranormal abilities would not make me any more or less conscious. What's your reasoning here?

This is such a new thought, unprecedented ground, complex and complicated issue, that I would have to let it sit (the connection between AI sentience and psychic phenomena). Everytime I think about it it's like when you look at a lenticular print where you tilt it to the side or a Gestalt shift visual illusion, it keeps flickering back and forth. I've proposed this as a question for the next Bernardo Kastrup Q&A on AI which will be the 24th of November.

It's like when you already have two poorly understood phenomena, combining them is bound to cause some serious question marks.

I am happy to admit that there are things I don't know.

Solipsism does not contradict or invalidate conscious AI.

You guys love to bring solipsism into places it don't belong.

You have to break that down, not just say it in one sentence.

Your metaphysical worldview is that you are god , the only being there is and the only consciousness there is and it’s imagining everything.
how does this allow for the existence of a conscious AI ? According to this worldview, I’m myself right now is something you are dreaming up .

“God is the Alpha Omega .. the beginning-less  beginning and the endless end .
He is the first without start . He is the last without end . He is the manifest actuality ..nothing covers him . He is the most hidden essence  ..nothing can grasp him .. nothing below him or more subtle than him .The ego is the belief I’m separate from god . Because being god is too good to be true .No matter how dark it gets or difficult it gets ..no matter how long it is going to take .. my destiny is the infinite happiness and infinite joy and love as the best thing ever ..God .  “

@Leo Gura dude don’t run away like that . You said you admit you don’t  Know when it’s the case . Well ,I asked you a very simple question. Why did you choose to ignore it . I’m not entitled of a response but you understand obviously that this is not the issue here . What I said is correct that you don’t want to admit that solipsism is a bunch of potato . You literally said a zillion times that there is only one conscious entity in the universe which is me/you . Then here you are saying “solipsism doesn’t contradict a conscious AI” . This means solipsism is a bunch of potato indeed .I’m calling this out . your ego apparently survives just fine as long as it gets to have the last word.  Your position is not even clear enough in this thread . I can’t compose a coherent takeaway from your comments in this thread . It’s just “maybe “, “we don’t know “” absolute vs relative conflation “ etc .  Take the microphone please.

Okay...Heh, two big coincidences surrounding my dream.

Look, Tucker Carlson OpenAI/Altman video was dropped only a few hours after I just quoted above disclosed my dream here.

See timestamps.

What are the odds, not only for it to drop only a few hours or so later, but for me also to drop a Tucker vid about Altman when I never listen to Tucker?

It's been a month  since Tucker spoke about either OpenAI or Altman as well. The video I linked earlier today was over a year ago, haven't seen any of Tucker's vids since then just searched his posting history.

I don't know if it has been mentioned on the thread already, but this is extremely relevant https://www.anthropic.com/research/global-workspace

Aside from being an emergent spontaneous property, it seems akin to what we'd call a conscious experience, or rather what is consciously accessible to us in a given moment and can subsequently report on, if asked to.

I just want people who think LLMs could be conscious (not talking about you Leo) to think about what an LLM really is. It predicts statistical relationships between words. Ok, so let's remove the words. What do you have? Something that predicts statistical relationships between things. So if you were to look at raindrops falling in a certain area, you could have an "LLM" that predicts where would you most likely see the next raindrop. Now, looking at this thing in action, how alive would it seem to you? How likely are you to project the idea that it is conscious onto it?

When you remove the mystery of language that drapes people's experience of LLMs, it becomes clear how different from "life" and also probably "experience" these things really are. That said, will I claim I "know" whether LLMs are conscious or not? No, and I think it's just a scary thing to decisively make such a judgement, about the possible sentience of another. But if you were to ask what I would guess, what is the most reasonable thing to think is most likely the case, then LLMs do not seem very good candidates for consciousness.

I think you might be onto something.

It's like saying is the mind itself conscious.

Are thoughts conscious. Are mental processes conscious.

The answer would be no me thinks.

Like if my mind goes silent, I'm still conscious.

Could the same be said of some AI robot, ie if access to information or calculation is cut off for a while

The thing I'm onto is that language is like 0,00001% (actually 0.0000034%, not so far off) of our evolutionary history of life on Earth, and that before that, we were experiencing the world through senses, perception, feelings, sounds, sights, colors, smells. And then in 67 years, we created something that quacks like a human, but then we forget we only started quacking like humans ourselves not that long ago and that it's not such a big deal.

Maybe it's possible to create AI with some kind of pure sensory intelligence.
