2026 US Midterms Shenanigans

One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us."

Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were:

1) End the war

2) Focus on cost of living/inflation

3) Put America First

4) Change our relationship to Israel

Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you.

The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Who is this guy?

What if this is just fascination + identity + seriousness being inflated into universal importance?

Awful lot of rigged elections last night.

Awful lot of radical jihadist woke lunatics soon to be sworn into office.

What a great outcome. I’m reminded of the whole “we’ll see” Chinese proverb — but cause for celebration as far as I see it now.

Besides the work of governing and helping people thrive, I’d love to see real accountability. I don’t want punishment or suffering for anyone. I don’t want humiliation or revenge.

But I do want a public reckoning with the last 10 years. Wrongdoing exposed, acknowledged, and addressed. Appropriate consequences where warranted. And meaningful safeguards against it ever happening again.

I’d love for us to be able to collectively say: This happened. It was unacceptable. We learned from it. And we’re not going to let it happen again.

And whatever the HELL that was — it is NOT normal.

Everything’s made up, and the points don’t matter.

Even Trump isn’t saying this. Complete nonsense with zero evidence.

Thought the sarcasm and absurdity were clear! These were exaggerated examples of things GOP candidates have genuinely thrown at Dems in recent history before these elections. I could have gone on. I suppose that could be considered “shitposting”.

I was joking. My bad if this wasn’t the appropriate place for it.

Also don’t mean to be boastful or arrogant (though it was a little bit). And indeed the point about the “we’ll see” Chinese proverb.

But happy to be called out if I’m being a pos! Don’t generally mean to be.

In all seriousness, I’m glad to have seen what seems to me to be such a clear electoral signal of disapproval of this presidency and perhaps broader affiliated political movement.

Jeffries hasn't talked to Trump and doesn't list impeachment as top priority

I don’t agree with what Jeffries is saying here. I agree democrats should have a positive agenda and not just run against Trump, but for 2028.
You shouldn’t actually want to do that now since people will continue to blame him and republicans for the next two years leading into 2028.

You shouldn’t want the spotlight to shine on democrats fixing affordability because that would require going through Trump and he’ll sell it as a win.

They should investigate corruption while passing bills that call for reducing cost of living and health care costs and ending the war, but require things republicans can’t agree with.

So you can keep saying you’re trying to help Americans but republicans are stopping you because they’re corrupt, and point to corruption investigations find.

Ken Martin, Chuck Schumer, & Hakeem Jeffries deserve a lot of credit for this blue tsunami. They're owed an apology from everyone that was giving them shit. Thanks to these guys, the democrats effectively blocked Republicans from appointing conservatives to the Supreme Court for many years

No, it was in spite of them, not because of them.

What about the right-wing appeals to to you?

Without turning this into a political platform: promoting the family (through pro-natalist policies, financial support or tax breaks for married couples), taking a hard line on law and order (death penalty, deterrent sentences, more police officers); and immigration (minimum quotas, no birthright citizenship; I understand people who argue that immigration is good for the economy and helps offset demographic decline but firstly it's essentially stealing labor from other countries, and secondly if you open your country up to poorer countries that also have much higher birth rates your own population and culture will eventually end up being replaced). Not too many taxes, and preferably relying more on VAT since it's better for businesses and encourages people to consume in the long run (you can even use VAT as a tool to achieve environmental or public health goals...).Sticking to meritocracy and not rationalize gender or ethnic quotas at least in public services...

Now I also have some statist and liberal positions that would make me lean more to the left on certain issues. I don't know American politics very well at all but if I had to pick the candidate whose views most closely resemble mine it would perhaps be Mitt Romney based on what I've seen.

The major problem with Trump is that, and this relates to non-duality, people on the right (although in other countries like France it's more the left/far-left that currently occupies this position; it depends) have massively fallen into the trap (which is actually a lowkey ego problem) of believing that someone they could negatively project themselves onto (narcissistically speaking; narcissism being what drives people to cling to their negative polarity; negative in the sense of accounting for limits if what I’m saying makes sense) would somehow fix their problems, when in reality all this does is fuel the pendulum.

A , erratic person who claims to want to fix a problem will always find a way to actually maintain it or even make it worse. An erratic person will produce erratic results that's what always happens.

Everybody lies. Numbers don't. Majority of americans are not DSA. Centrists won the midterms. Once again, Chick Schumer, Hakeem Jefferies, & Ken Martin deserve a lot of credit
