Status is another word for fame and respect. Achieving those in a field that matters to you is important.

Running away from that fact is a bit silly. Status-seeking when it becomes a replacement for healthy self-esteem and pushes you down paths that lack integrity is when it becomes a problem. 

Most people don't bring much value to others so they aren't rewarded with status. If you help people solve the problems that stop their life from being great they tend to praise you and tell others about how you've helped them. This is the foundation of status.
