I don't think you understand the proposed deal, Canada will be restricted from trading with other countries, will have free trade from u.s. and the u.s. will tariff everything that's also made in the u.s., Canadian auto industry would cease to exist, so would  lumber.

Yeah they should push back on some of that. I think the US will pull out of NATO though and will exclude Canada from security guarantees if the deal goes poorly and I will have to go up North to get killed by Chinese and Russian robots while freezing my ass off so I think that's truly the option they better fucking avoid.

Canada doesn't even meet Nato dues so our military equipment is dog shit as well. If that actually happens I'm moving to Europe and joining @TheGod in Marid; you better believe I'm not enlisting.

Trump has ZERO political leeway with the upcoming midterms in 3 months, tarrifs cause inflation, prices are the primary cause for how elections go. AND a blowout election would greatly benefit Canada and pay off if Trump does play chicken, which he's too chicken to anyway.

You guys see those terms Trump demanded? Total loss of sovereignty

The larger game US is playing is trying to lock down countries into the US orbit and prevent any strengthening of a rival system ie China/BRICS that challenges US primacy

Remember Carney talking about Middle powers coming together to not be bullied by larger hegemons on either side.. US is pre-emptively forcing the question of picking a side now whilst it has the most leverage

If it were to give Canada time it would slowly build other trade relations weaning itself off US weakening their hand - but all that takes time. Avengers Mid Tier can’t get built in a day..

US for the past decades could allow Wall Street (finance) to monetise global industry and let its rust belt rust (industry) because it still largely fed a US imperial system - but now a alternative system is being built/led by China

So now US has to care about industrial strength (scissors) and secure resources (rocks) to back its financial power (paper)

Ultimately finance is a claim on something, financialisation is simply claims built on claims in a fugazi jenga tower but it still sits on a floor of real value that is its collateral

That collateral and material foundation now needs re-enforcing hence even Jamie Dimon with his paper empire (finance) now even saying US needs a “arsenal of democracy” and that “global reserve currency is at threat if economic and military strength isn’t fortified”

Hence all these tarrifs, coercive behaviour etc is an attempt to sharpen rusted scissors (industry) , secure more rocks (resources), keep paper credible (finance and what it claims) = keep Uncle Sam OS on top against Dragon OS emerging

@zazen Perhaps it will end up in a really good deal being put together and USMCA turning into the previously talked about North American Union

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Union

BRICS is looking pretty financially powerful with China going into the next 10 years but if the US and Canada make a good deal we have a pretty powerful industrial sector as well, not quite China level but still that combined with good relations with Europe is solid.

Idk maybe this is effective psychological warfare?

Seems a bit silly to me but it's clearly bothering a lot of people lol

I would love know what the negotiations looked like. I think Carney is indeed a more astute individual than Trump but I think he has some ego and wants to look tough. I can't be sure if I'm right but I think he is bluffing a bit. It was my understanding that we need a renewed good version of the USMCA deal otherwise the Canadian economy is gonna dump.

It's interesting that you are citing Mark Carney's ego as a problem here.

He is in quite a unique situation where the actions he took make sense both from a long-term in short-term perspectives, but it's less clear how the upcoming medium-term will play out.

  • In the short term - stepping away from the negotiations boosted his popularity, helped him win the three recent byelections, and allowed him to further secure his majority in the house of common.
  • In the long term - stepping away from the US encourages Canada to build more independence and further decouple from the US. The Canada government is also retailiating against swing states ahead of the US midterms, which may help weaken Trump in the second half of his term. A weaker Trump does put Canada in a better position - as we've seen with the supreme court previously marking tariffs illegal. His position sets an example for other world leaders to follow.

The big question is how will Canada do in the next 2 years, with Trump still in power, though Mark Carney has the majority necessary to avoid an election during these potentially tough times.

I think applying pressure to Trump during his midterms make sense. Carney doesn't seem one to levy insults for no reason, unlike Doug Ford, which would only serve to worsen the trade relations.

Decoupling from the US is a nice ideal but it's not something based in reality anytime soon. Supply chains on that level take a decade of massive capital investment to reroute, not just a few nice phone calls with European and south american leaders and 2 years later we don't need the US anymore. I hope that the Carney administration will reestablish a bridge to Washington and will pick a time where Trump's narcissism is triggered by another source and he needs a quick win to secure a great deal between the US and Canada.

The asymmetry of exports make it quite hard for Canada to negotiate with a lot of bargaining power with 75% of ours going to the US and only like 18% of the US going to Canada.
