A Foucault analysis of the psychotherapy industry

For the record - I have some uncomfortable hallucinations all the time. Meds don't really help, but my psychiatrist might put me on stronger ones in a few days.

No history of irrational behavior or anything like that, just hallucinations.

Meditation and occasional psychedelics make zero difference with my condition.

Interesting strategy.

i remember having a discussion about a similar situation with another user a couple years ago.

there may be some ethical considerations to take into account here - e.g., has your therapist consented to this? this is at least worth reflecting on for a little while.

why you think it is unethical?

On the contrary since the therapist does not have access to your sober self.

idk if it is but i think it's worth questioning.

what do you think are potential pros and cons of this choice you have made?

could it potentially be harmful to lie to your therapist about this kind of thing? does it create more distance or more connection? could it be harmful (to your own healing journey as well as your therapist) to have this kind of unspoken influence that you bring into each session, without informing or asking them about it?

@Judy2 real work is done by the client himself , therapist is just a coach on the side line. That is how I see it. Most therapists re also incompetent so I don’t care about their opinion too much. I still like my current therapist though. But she never took any psychedelics so telling her things about it is just bothersome and not worth my time.

Yeah, sounds like it would needlessly freak her out.

Microdose is ok. Nothing weird can happen. I also don’t use my car or anything. Sometimes I also like to microdose lsd when going out. I did it during my trip to Barcelona and it lead to some lovely adventures. In real life I can be walled off from strangers. LSD takes that away. But it is good to have some friends around if you are doing it although I wouldn’t need it because I can fend for myself. It is more for emotional co-regulation.

One psychedelic trip is worth 6 months in therapy.

It can do. But it can also fuck people up way worse.

Depends on the style of therapy

Sounds like a waste of time.

All my therapists do psychedelics.

I had to fire my long-time therapist a couple years ago cus of  how close-minded and judgemental  they were to psychedelics and spirituality. Which was also a painful decision, since they also saved my life.

it is true that you are the one who has to do the real work, but said work also relies on your ability to change patterns with other people, and your learning to have more authentic interactions (goes for everyone, not just you). it's not all abstract stuff in your head, therapy can be a quite practical safe space to rehearse new interaction styles.

....

* idk i give up. don't know how to explain what i meant. it's up to you, ultimately. in the end, i don't know what works for you and what doesn't.

sorry if i wasted your time:)

lol my therapist also hinted at it in our last session, and i sort of laughed but was too shy to ask him explicitly if i had understood correctly.

I am glad you found that funny. I thought I was being too crass, but your perspective has changed that :)

The bar is so low. I’m just happy I found couple of good therapists who just care and are okish in terms of competence. Finding a therapist who is into psychedelics is like finding a needle in a haystack. I don’t have the energy to go to 10 therapists right now.

That is true. But I’m trying new interaction styles with strangers too.  Since I won’t be seeing them again anyway.
