Interesting quote by Robert Greene

18 posts in this topic

This post made me think. I'm not even sure I agree with it. Generally I think fighting fire with fire is ineffective. On the other hand poetry is also ineffective when fighting fire or swordsmen.

I take it as have the means to engage with the conflict that you are dealt with. To me that goes straight to spiritual people having a blindspot for business and power building and they think being at peace with their own mind will save them from the problems of the world.

On the other hand I agree with you that we don't solve wars with getting better at war, that was what we learned with the cold war and us being inches away from nuclear winter. We deal with it with realistic empathy. Naive empathy is thinking that your nice words are gonna stop someone's violent goals like europe tried doing with the appeasement of Hitler. Realistic empathy is understand where your enemy is coming from and what his objectives are and being able to either meet those in other ways or being able to exert less force due to greater leverage ala Power vs Force by David Hawkins

Robert makes phenomenal books, highly recommend everyone read 48 laws of power and Mastery. I'm reading one of his new ones laws of human nature right now and its one of the deepest books I've read in my entire life.

He’s sorta the faux intellectual thought leader type person that stage orange larpers think is deep but anyone who actually extensively reads books knows he is mediocre. He’s the intellectual for the performative, for the IG influencer or Rogan listener. He’s sorta in the middle of quality and depth so I think people higher on the spectrum will find him trying too hard. There are people who are less intelligent than Greene but through this drop mad wise proverbs that hit. Greene is more nuanced but he isn’t sharp enough to penetrate higher spheres of reason and wisdom.

"Fight for truth" is not always completely understood.  We just assume there's the truth.  We don't appreciate "power" in relationship (or relation) to what truth passes (gets big) and what stays silent (stays small), and how that matters and so on.

Contemplate this one.

But if there were never a swordsman, you would never draw a gun.

Kind of agree. But there are many levels to life and I think Greene helps with some of those levels.

I think it's gonna be quite good, Robert compounds on himself and the concepts he introduced in the 90s he has kept refining in the one I'm reading now so I assume the book on the sublime is gonna be beautiful. Curious how his thoughts on the brutal systems of life, intrinsic beauty and aesthetics will end up reconciling.
