How to lose weight without exercising

30 posts in this topic

@AION Without a calorie deficit, no amount of “metabolism fixing” will cause fat loss.
But improving your metabolism makes that deficit happen more easily, sustainably and more healthy.

fix your metabolism, calorie counting is outdated, I can't believe people still believe in this unhealthy bullshit

@AION Counting calories is literally just keeping track of how much energy you consume and deliberatly reducing it to make your body burn excess fat.

How is that unhealthy?

@bazera @YIDIRYIDIR    I don't need to count because I have a good relationship with my body and just eat intuitively. That should be the goal.

If you stop eating processed foods, and just eat like a human, then you can't binge anyway.

Calorie counting is not wrong, the whole paradigm is wrong.

I just focus on my metabolism which includes good sleep, exercise, eating foods that enhance my gut bacteria and I don't need to diet because my natural style of eating is already where I want to be.

I don't want to have an eating style that is like a choir. My diet is mostly mediterranean, a lot of vegetables, fresh cut meats, healthy carbs, leafy greens, and extra virgin olive oil.

When I'm stocked up on healthy protein, healthy carbs, and fats/oils, my body doesn't crave unhealthy and more food anyway.

Why Calorie Counting is Considered Outdated

Biological Inaccuracy: The standard calorie values used today were developed in the 19th century and do not account for how the human body actually processes energy. For instance, the body uses roughly 30% of the calories in protein just to break it down, a factor not reflected on most labels.

The "Food Matrix" Effect: Not all calories are absorbed equally. For example, the body absorbs significantly fewer calories from whole almonds than it does from almond butter, even if the calorie count on the package is identical.

Label Errors: Food labels can legally have a +/-20% discrepancy in reported calories. This margin of error makes precise tracking nearly impossible in practice.

Metabolic Adaptation: When you drastically cut calories, your body often slows its metabolism to preserve energy, making long-term weight loss via restriction difficult to maintain.

Modern Alternatives and Approaches

Rather than rigid tracking, many experts recommend these holistic strategies:

Prioritize Nutrient Density: Focus on whole foods, fiber, and lean proteins that promote satiety and gut health.

Calorie Awareness: Use tracking as a short-term tool for a few weeks to understand portion sizes and habits, rather than a permanent "life sentence".

Intuitive Eating: Learn to recognize and trust internal hunger and fullness cues instead of relying on an app to tell you when to stop eating.

Hand-Sized Portions: A more relaxed method involves using your hands to estimate portions: a palm-sized portion of protein, two handfuls of veggies, and a thumb-sized portion of fat.

When Calorie Counting Still Has Value

Short-term Awareness: For those who have no idea how much they are eating, tracking for a short period can provide a necessary "eye-opener" about calorie-dense foods.

Specific Performance Goals: Athletes or bodybuilders may still use precision tracking to hit specific macronutrient targets for performance.

Caution: Calorie counting is strongly discouraged for individuals with a history of disordered eating, as it can foster obsessive behaviors and anxiety

Cutting out carbs is also bad for most people. Only certain people can sustain that. For most people cutting out carbs is unhealthy

@AION Yes, that's my goals as well, after I lose excess fat.

What you say doesn't work for me because I'm interested in weight loss. I just have to eat less food than my body needs to maintain current weight. That can be done intuitively, but counting calories helps me to be more accurate in my process and if I get stuck, I have a tool that I can use to adjust my intake appropriately.

I don't want to trust my intuition when it comes to weight loss and number on the scale.

This is not a long-term strategy. It's a weight-loss strategy that's been working for me.

If one method worked then the diet industry wouldn't be as big as it is. Some people cannot eat intuitively. For some people that would mean eating nothing but ice-cream. Some people have broken appetites. Eating disorders. Metabolic disorders.

Different styles of eating work for different people. But you cannot beat the laws of thermodynamics - burn more than you consume. It is as simple as that.

Easiest way is to eat 80% vegetables and meat. Remain in a deficit. Carbs are easy to cut because they are not essential like protein and fats.

The best diet is the one you can sustain, be sane and results in health. Repeat. The best diet is the one you can maintain and be sane.

I recommend exercise for long term health. If you just cut youll look and most likely feel like shit. Do some zone 2 cardio. Even yoga is good. Anything to move the body or else it will rust.

Don't be a puss puss - get the heartrate up 😄

Why not exercise?

I observed most people that don't exercise at some points tried, did way too much, and stayed with the impression that it's way too hard and simply not for them. Or they have some problem that needs a more simple way of training at first, etc.

The yt channel I currently recommend for sound gym advice is Jonathan Warren (I'll link him below)

On the issue of diet, I tried many diets and keep searching for something that keeps my weight, energy level and health issues in check.

Currently, I am really into the advice of Jay Feldman (I'll also link below) and I have to say that my body composition is stabilizing, but more importantly, my energy and hormone levels are actually feeling quite satisfactory lately.

In summary, what seems to work is this:

- at least 1 gram per kg of bodyweight in fat, at the very least 10g of fat per meal. Prolly closer to 30g is better. 80kg man, 3-4 meals a day, you get the point.

- somewhere between 1 and 2 grams of protein per kg of body weight. More is not better. Perhaps around 30g to 50g per meal is more than enough.

- carbs probably should be at least twice the grams of protein per day and per meal

Carbs too low seems to be a big problem for our metabolism, and although is can alleviate some symptoms short term, it's not a long term solution.

The important part seems to be regaining the health of the metabolism, and the actual food choices.
