Is the outside of my room real?

5 posts in this topic

Does the outside world exist? From a modern perspective one might say that the world outside does exist of course obviously! From a post modern perspective one might say how can you know for a fact that it is there when you are not seeing it? Which of those two is true? I think that it does exist and not exist at the same time in a sort of quantum mechanical fashion. Reality truly is an infinite field of potential

There are different types of existence.

There is the existence of the inside of your room, the stuff you can directly perceive. Call it direct existence.

You know that if you look outside your room, something will exist there. There is never non-existence. But until you look you can't know exactly what will be there. Call this unknown existence. You can build a model in your head about what might be there and trust that model, but whatever, it is not direct existence.

If you hear a noise from outside your room, then that is direct existence, but it's not the full experience of the outside of the room. There is a sliding scale between unknown existence and direct experience.

If the inside of my room is real, then the outside my room must also be real.

Your sensory perception is an indicator of reality, but it's far inferior to the logical mind. Through logic, you can, for example, deduce the theory of relativity, something you can't do through sensory perception alone.

Logic dictates that there is a changing reality outside your room. Your sensory perception captures what is inside your room. To think that what your sensory perception perceives is real and what your logical mind deduces is false is a rather strange philosophy, like being flat earth or any other obscurantist mentality typical of people who feel threatened or inferior by their low intellectual level and seek an emotional outlet to place themselves above the others.
