If one thinks porn & climate change aren't problems, I can't take them seriously

61 posts in this topic

And it frustrates me because people who believe porn is a serious problem tend to be labeled "right wing" and people who believe climate change is a serious problem tend to be labeled "left wing".

When to me it's just exceedingly, clearly obvious that both of those things are incredibly bad and I'm not even going to waste time listing reasons why as they're so absolutely easily proven by any google search, AI search, whatever the fuck have you.

So for me it's become a litmus test - if someone can't recognize at the very least that those are major issues, I just cannot take that person to be a serious person.

I think it may help if you frame the issue a little differently. The way I see it is that porn is a serious issue in that there are human traffickers who profit from exploiting the corruption and weaknesses within the porn industry. This might not be an issue inherent to porn itself, but rather how it is being used. Is this perspective acceptable to you? What if I say human trafficking is a serious issue instead of porn?

@trenton You make good points but porno in itself can be highly addictive and can lead one to being led by the flesh instead of the spirit. Now, I'm not suggesting a black and white take, but rather there are serious realities that can come with it. I'd suggest overall, in a world like to today, with a culture/nations who are still "asleep at the wheel", so to speak, when you incorporate mass porn and sexualization in adverts/movies/music, this is an overall negative. Raised in a culture who is unconscious/repressed realities with their sexaulity...these combinations don't produce good fruit.

What's a middle way though, that's where my mind goes here as I type this. Thoughts?

As I already said I'm not going to debate, but, no, human trafficking and porn itself are extreme problems. The usage of porn itself is extremely bad.

If a left-winger refuses to acknowledge porn is bad, that’s not comparable to the right-winger rejecting things like evolution and climate change. The comparison doesn’t make sense. Also, the right largely says porn is bad out of religious dogma or repressed sexuality, not from some intelligent systems thinking.

I am left wing but I dont believe climate change and I believe pornography is harmful. Trans is a mental illness the earth is flat left winger. The only reason I am not right is beause every single right wing representative and are morons. They have - intelligence. Left wingers are more compassionate and intelligent except for reddit.

What about porn about climate change? Like an adult film about two people stuck on a mountain because the coast is flooded who decide to bang because there’s nothing else to do xD

Lmao that's funny. But yeah no matter the plot I think it fucks us up tremendously to get aroused to videos on screens of other people engaging in sex.

I really can't see porn as a big deal no matter how you slice it. Like Joshe mentioned, most people who are staunchly anti-porn tend to be so because of religious dogma and believing masturbation is shameful as opposed to be an epistemically independent belief.

Your not getting rid of junk food, no matter how unhealthy it is because people have an animalistic baseline desire for grease. The same is true for porn. Besides, it is unfeasible, since people will instantly find a work around to any restrictions. I think it is healthier to consider what it means to you personally and make a lifestyle choice for yourself. Be honest about being an animal instead of being ideological.

It is quiet unliberal as well to dictate that people should all adopt the same lifestyle. We are mostly above that shit now as a society. You can choose how to live your life and can't take that from people (for the most part). It would be more accurate to say your personally left-wing (liberal when it comes to your beliefs), but when it comes to your politics you are actually right-wing (authoritarian when it comes to other people's beliefs), at least relative to certain issues. Wanting to ban porn is by definition right-wing.

I'm not going to get into long debates. I never said we need to ban porn. And I'm 100% not religious whatsoever.

Not going to go back and forth with you, if you won't even type "why might porn be bad for someone" into chatgpt or something which will spit out a million reasons then you're not interested in the truth and probably are attached to your porn.

Outlets for sexual frustration and tension are natural. Not everyone can get laid or wants to for that matter, but the biological drive doesn't go away.  Abuse of it can lead to addictive, unhelpful behaviors such as isolation or regressed social development, a breakdown of the birthrate etc. It also saps a lot of the drive to go out and get a girl, or take the steps such as working hard that would get you one. I would argue that light use of porn in society encourages the birthrate. Its one reason conservatives are behaving oddly, to  increasingly prioritize a stricter dress code to be the social norm, although I understand the other benefits to monogamy etc that this brings.

With climate change, countries drying up, causing crime, food shortages and food inflation, migration, and war, increased cases of heatstroke and heat-related damage to infrastructure, for example (will all increase), storm and weather damage, across the globe is of course, a major issue, and a leader not tackling them is the mark of a fool.

*Oh and BTW the mainstreaming of only fans, to be a career path is extremely destructive to the family unit for those involved. If I could surmise it all in one sentence. If its not special, reserved for your spouse, and important: Then its not special, reserved for your spouse, or important. - Which is the breakdown of a stable family unit for anyone seeking that stability and legacy. Sex is made casual, and cheating normalised, and that is a bad thing, however, wanting sex to build something meaningful should be encouraged through stable relationships. Thus, banning porn itself is not the answer, but neither is building out the sex industry to be an everyday occupation.

As always, the answer is a balance in reacting to social pressures.

I guess I agree with most of what you wrote but no idea how porn encourages birth rate.

Porn is no more or less a problem than drug culture or excessive use of screens. It's all just dopamine hits giving short term pleasure. As for climate change, until the people who talk about it actually reduce carbon emissions themselves, not much will improve.  You see a lot of people on the left who fly all over the world and have large carbon footprints themselves. It's one thing to talk about carbon emissions, it's another thing to reduce them oneself, and most people don't want to give up their enjoyment of life and experiencing everything to live on principle, and the banking systems which rely on consumption and perpetual growth to fund unfunded liabilities, don't want people to stop consuming.

As to the solution to all these problems, if you want to give people freedom you have to accept they aren't all going to make the "right" choice... which means you're supporting forcing people to live a certain way. The mistake the left makes is thinking people will simply make the right choice, when given unlimited freedom, and then there's the matter of what choices are considered "right" which is in the eyes of the beholder ... in any case it takes pavlonian conditioning and enforcement of laws to force people to behave in the way those in charge would want them to behave.

Still don't wanna debate too much but don't see how someone can see the creation of porn with all the exploitation that goes into it as just as bad as other dopamine traps like junk food.

Junk food physically toxifies and kills millions per year and is a leading contributor of poor self esteem. If you had a choice to snap your fingers to solve either the junk food problem or the porn problem, which problem would you solve? There's no contest here. It's not even close to which is the correct answer.

Snap your fingers and make all vegetables taste even more satisfying than the best junk food or snap your fingers and make the desire to masterbate to porn go away. And you'd choose to make porn go away?

I watch porn. It takes me like 5-10 minutes to make the bald man cry. And when I'm finished, there is no noticeable toxic effect. I think it might be how you're looking at it. To me, it's easier to climax than without, and I just want to get it done, usually. I rarely setup shop with candles. Taking it very seriously can be problematic, but even then, still not comparable to junk food or climate change.
