Question for those above 30: Does it become harder to learn new skills?

I've been hearing how your ability to learn new skills or study new domains of Reality becomes increasingly harder as you become older. However, I wonder how true that is, in case one actually trains its learning muscle and doesn't let it atrophy. On the other hand, I don't want to delude myself and find reduced cognitive abilities that prevent me from doing what I want later on in life.

So I really wanna know this to take important decisions about my future

Not at all, in fact in can become easier to learn new skills and take on knowledge. That's because you build on the things you learnt before. Cognitive decline only really happens much later, say past 60 if it happens at all: there's a great many factors including diet and exercise, disease and using your brain in general. 

What does reduce as you get older is time. You have a great many more responsibilities and your attention is spread over many more different things. This can make it exponentially harder to take on new skills or learn new things. So most people end up doing this through employment as that's really the only place you can have solid blocks of time to build up skills.

I've found that 30+ learn skills faster because of their work ethic, which they built over years. But there's certainly trade-offs. They also carry their biases, and try not to go full on, mostly when it comes to technical stuffs.

30 is the new 70. Amazing. Utterly amazing. I'm now convinced 100% that something happened to rapidly decline the timestamp within the brain. You guys will challenge me, but I know what i'm talking about. I'm old enough to know. Years ago that number would have been between 50 and 60. To constantly be seeing the number 30 being used as a reference for getting older utterly amazes me at this point. Don't know if you've seen other threads where people 30 and younger, even much younger refer to themselves as aging. Someone even said at the ripe old age of 17. 

To simply answer your question, NO! But that's my perspective and maybe it will become harder if one believes they're old at 30. It's a mind game and time is relative. Take it from me, this age thing is irrelevant, it's up to how the brain perceives time and it's getting shorter by the minute. In 10yrs maybe 20 yr olds will think they're ancient.

Thank, you for this statement because it goes quite well with my comment and maybe they will not think i'm crazy when I say 50-60 is when the concerns start; and like you said, if it happens at all.

@Davino the world is new when you're young, so the brain is of course going to be very plastic. When the world becomes old to you, why would your brain also not get old and or already be a reflection of such? It's all very elementary physics. Only hang around people that are still human otherwise they will make you inhuman. Joy, love, inspiration, courage in the face of adversity, curiosity, self-sovereignty, agency, gratitude and self-respect. These are real people. These are people with brains still plastic. Live life in reverse and you'll live a happy one. "In reverse?" Meaning, ask questions like: well what is it that keeps a brain plastic and open to new experiences? Start there. Suggestion: its the imagination.

I'm 28, but I'll weigh in...

As I've gotten older, I'm a lot better at thinking creatively within fields I already have mastery within, such as cinema and music. I crave new genres and new approaches to the artforms I've come to love over the course of my life. Writing new songs and learning new songs becomes easier and easier as I get older.

What I have difficulty with is entering entirely new domains, such as cooking (which I've tried picking up over the past couple years). I feel as if I'm so behind, I'll never catch up. Unless I put in 100% effort, my food is awful. The best I can make is a fettucine alfredo, scrambled eggs or homemade mac and cheese, but even those dishes took me several tries to get right.

I think to some extent yes, but you have a lot in your control still. People still learn new things when they're older. I know people who first start med school in their mid 30s. Or people pick up weightlifting in their 40s. My dad picked up yoga at 50 and hes quite good at many of the poses and theory (and he was pretty unathletic before). Majority of it is a limiting belief imo

If based on our answers and what you read is the reasoning behind making a decision-that right there is the reason why your life wont be amazing even if you made the right choice because you will always be a puppet and not the leader of you.

38yo - no cognitive decline.

Executive function has only improved.

You must be clean.

No drugs, no alcohol.

Clean food. Water, Sleep. Basics

Focus is a trained ability. Use it or loose it

Don't rot your brain with social media. Delete that shit. Trash

The older you get the more important these factors become.

When you are young your body carries you. As you get older you must look after, and carry, your body.

Body = mind. Move your body. It's a dopamine release.

My experience. 

I work in commercial construction - science (synchrotron), laboratories, medical (hospitals) & educational institutions. Very involved work. You can't fuck around when you work in these fields.

I've been very successful with no degree, no training. I began this career only 3 years ago.

It only gets better ...

Thanks for your perspectives. I'm really taking each one of them into account. I feel like the more I age the more mature and stable I'll become but some mind flexibility may be at risk too. There are obvious physical performance declines, as seen in elite athletes, so I wonder how it works with the mind. Most groundbreaking discoveries in science are made by individuals before 30, although each field is a world and some favour experience over creativity and mental gimnastics.

Your answers are implying @Davino is making decisions based on others opinions. 

That others are responsible for his life decisions.

Unless we are misunderstanding you - the underlying belief you have is we each aren't responsible for our actions.

Ultimately, we are only responsible for our own actions.

If you don't know or understand this, you will progress through life blaming others - which reveals you lack sovereignty, not Davino.

Im saying that his decisions and actions are based on the outside influences.Same way they didnt believe 1 mile could be ran in certen time.So ultimately he is making decisions, but based on wrong interpretations.Its not coming from understanding of himself but his interpretations of the world and authorities.

Then based on that i can see he actually is not authority over his life, because his decision are actually not his decisions based on knowledge of self but knowledge of the interpretations.

He is not leader of himself ,he leads himself based on reactions which can give an illusion of leadership, one actually think he lives in his world but he lives based on world imposed on them.

We do know, or comprehend, what actions he may take from now.

He could be disregarding all data given here.

We will never know.

Well its not 100% accurate nothing is but 9/10 the way someone speaks exposes their mindset and based on that mindset i can see where they are mentally, where they are mentally that's how their decisions gonna be and that's the life they live.

So from their perceptions,how one forms the queastions,sometimes the information they valauntereed exposes it.
