Trotsky was brilliant and he was largely responsible for the Red army winning the civil war, but whether or not Lenin wanted him as his successor is debatable. Its popular to think that Trotsky was Lenin's preferred successful, but there's no concrete or solid proof of this.

But Trotsky's political ideas were insane. Trotsky's ideas were actually where Neoconservatism came from. Most classical neoconservative thinkers where once subscribers of Trotsky's worldview.
