Who do you think is mentally ill?

11 posts in this topic

Who would you describe as mentally ill? What would constitute a mentally ill person in your eyes?

I'm still working on this definition.

You should seek to transcend the limitations of the ego and the mind in order to experience a sense of unity with the universe or ultimate reality. You can do meditation, sef inquiry and contemplating for that. To recognize the underlying oneness that is believed to exist beyond the realm of dualistic perception.

When you are excessively removed from objective reality for some reason.
By "reality" I also and above all mean the reality of what is good for working on one's libidinal agenda.
A conscious, calculating mythomaniac is not really mentally ill.

If you dont understand, you're not twisted enough.

So a sociopath is not mentally ill in your eyes?

Also a couple of questions for ya- contemplate and answer each.

How do you exactly know they're conscious, the one who is lying?

How do you know they're calculating? What if they're delusional or exhibiting personality changes?

A personality disorder is a mental illness as per dsm manuals!!!! What do you think?

Lying is a co-morbid condition of several mental disorders too?

I don't expect an urgent answer. Take your time.

When I was younger I used to naively think that the majority of adults "have it together" and understood reality. Now that I'm getting a bit older it's because increasingly obvious that basically every single person is fucked :D. We are all just coping in our own way trying to understand why we are here and what to do about it.

I think the human condition is one of confusion, panic, and mental illness.

Seriously just watch what people do day to day, their habits, and listen to what they say and believe. Insanity is the norm.

I don't know, sociopath seems like a pretty broad concept.
It has to be case by case

Of course

If they are in control or if their behavior is compulsive.
In fact I will self-correct, for me it is essential control that differentiates mental illness from "neuroatypy".
So to clarify a person who lies all the time by "calculation" is not really "crazy" but a pathological liar would be, in short.

Ditto

It seems legitimate, because these personality disorders are for the most part undergone, handicapped.

Yes, but maybe there's some mental illness that drives you to tell the truth all the time.

I could perhaps give answers to more specific questions but it is quite difficult to elucubrate on such broad subjects.
And ultimately it seems to be a problem of semantics.

Cool. Even if I agree to disagree, it seems to be a problem of semantics, but also general attitudes. What is mentally ill to me might not be mentally ill to someone else. There are broader agreements but the finer details is where most people disagree.

To me, a lot of behaviors including sociopathy can be categorized as "mentally ill behaviors" although the specific person born with such traits might not be distinctly mentally ill. I'd consider someone mentally ill if they have little control over emotions, act impulsively, lack cognition of circumstances and consequences of their actions, instability in behavior, patterns of behavior that are generally not found in the average population, presence of coping mechanisms, inability to adjust to normal social life, inability to function normally like the average population, sleep issues, dysregulation, excessive preoccupation and fragility.
