Such an interesting album by Lorde. While it feels, on some level, inconsistent and unfinished, there are nonetheless some phenomenal songs here (What Was That, Shapeshifter, Current Affairs, David).

I think this is a perfect example of the yet-to-be-named “post-pop” signifier.

There are the hooks, the chord progressions, the song structures clearly in dialogue with pop music, but the emphasis is on texture and, interestingly enough, harmony - with very rich, complex, and layered bass lines that are consistently catchy, and at times almost industrial-sounding percussion. And of course, the focal point of the album is the very intimate, confessional, fragmented prose - like a mixture of Sylvia Plath poems, diary entries, and drunk text messages.

Overall, a very significant release and one I’ll be returning to for a while.

“Did you ever say Yes to a single joy? O my friends, then you said Yes to all woe as well. All things are chained and entwined together, all things are in love; if ever you wanted one moment twice, if ever you said: ‘You please me, happiness! Abide, moment!’ then you wanted everything to return!” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Sometimes a catchy hook is all it takes.

Nicolas Jaar is probably the only producer I can think of who has that kind of European couture sensibility for sound - not necessarily for composition itself, but for the sheer texture and subtlety of the sonic craft.

Also, little storytime: many years ago, in some gentrified „techno“ club, I was outside with my friends, smoking and chatting with a group of girls we knew - one of whom I was rather enjoying flirting with. Suddenly, I heard this A.A.L. track („Cityfade“) start playing inside (one of my favorite dance tracks). But of course, in my youthful, horny desperation, I kept resisting the urge to run in and dance my ass off, deciding instead to stay outside and continue my half-hearted courtship.

After a couple of minutes, her group of friends collectively announced they were leaving for some other place because the music where we were was supposedly “undanceable.”

Safe to say, I missed the chance to hear this house music perfection on a proper soundsystem - only to discover that my charming companion was, in fact, an insufferably prim and spectacularly uninteresting person. I’ve never sobered up from the intoxication of sexual desire faster than I did that night.

Dude, I just discovered this album a couple of days ago - somehow it completely slipped under my radar. I’m so obsessed. Best singer-songwriter project this side of Sufjan Stevens?

Also, his work with Geese - especially their last album 3D Country - is incredible. Feels like the American answer to BCNR and Black Midi‘s metamodern maximalist take on post-punk.

This song has been blowing my mind every time I’ve listened to it.

The vocal yodeling and those beautiful, low-key orchestral arrangements with the sitar-like pluckings almost sound like a white Gen Z spiritual awakening - big Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane vibes.

And then, of course, that batshit crazy “God is real” rant in the second half.

Such a great song.

Of course, even for a staunch atheist like me, Sanders‘s music approaches something you could call „sacred,“ so I don’t want to draw vulgar equivalencies. But the influences are undeniable, and I think they’re put to perfectly fine and authentic use here.
