Self Help vs University

11 posts in this topic

Is there anyone who accomplishes high growth results while studying in college? I mean for example doing meditation in a serious way, or shadow work, or allocating much time general reading self help books and doing other self help stuff. I have a hard time peacemaking my endavours of self help and the purpose of finishing university education. Sometimes it is hard even to look at the conflict between these motivations.

I studied psychology for a year and while doing that:

  • read > 70 books
  • made 1000s of euros
  • met 100s of new people
  • had 100s of spiritual breakthroughs
  • gained 20lbs of lean muscle
  • wrote 1000s of pages of philosophy

I'm not even exaggerating.

I had no social life though, apart from going to parties and clubbing.

It can definitely be done, but you have to be absolutely nuts to push through all the comfortable excuses and conventions of regular society.

Setting a routine helps a lot. Sleep and wake up on a fixed time. Build focus. Don't try to take on too many projects. Just limit yourself to 3-4 important things per day on working days and leaving the rest for the weekend. Eleminate all distractions (social media, youtube, Tv, Netflix) leave that for weekends.

Amazing.

I'm curious about the most transformative books that you've read.

If you read one book, read "Sex, Ecology, Spirituality" by Ken Wilber.

On another note: What I did might sound sexy, but it actually stems from a deep feeling of not ever being good enough.

This level of productivity and hustle is not sustainable unless youre insanely obsessive and megalomaniacal - so be careful what you wish for...

It's amazing how our ideals about what is good for us ends up hurting ourselves.

Are you familiar with Peter Ralston or Jed Mckenna?

@Nilsi

I also like his style of teaching.

I'm going all in with his books, contemplations, videos.

Also I recommend Brendan Lea, his personal assistant.

Great stuff on his YT channel:

University is a lot of foundational education. That is good and useful stuff. Not everything should be about self-help and massive results. Invest the time to get a solid education in your field.
