The irony is that freedom actually is an absolute good. But it's not at all what the ego wants. If you actually got a taste of absolute freedom you would shit your pants in horror.

God is holding absolute freedom at bay for you, treating you with kid gloves to keep you from freaking out. Or rather, you are doing it to yourself via the mechanism of fear.
