Does the dog think a human is a feeling?

I think dogs can pattern match sequences. They can observe and know or guess what might occur next.

My pup will know it is time to leave the house in the morning based on a sequence of sounds I make.

There are cognitive processes involved in being able to do the above: associative learning (sound cues), sequential pattern recognition (she will only motion to go when things happen in a rough order, instead of all events being independent), anticipation (predictive processing I think it is called) and generalisation (the sounds I make might change a bit, but the overall pattern signals we are leaving).

I think this implies a "thinking" although it might not be anything like we experience thinking to be. Much less distinct from feeling. Perhaps one big soup.

Probably the best way you can understand it is picturing how babies/kids are attached to their parents. They constantly look for their attention. A dog is like a todler their entire life.

Also dogs are blessed with excellent smell. Something to envy.

A dog feels very different from a cat. A dog feels home when he sees you. A dog feels safe when he sees you. A dog is a perfect servant. Always loyal to the end. A dog will give his life to save you. A dog is one of the most divine acts of love on this planet.

@Joseph Maynor Yeah I agree. That’s what I don’t think means no?

It has to be speculative.  I'm pretty smart, but I can't say I can always read a dog's mind.

@Joseph Maynor I mean, it doesn’t speak. Do you think it thinks thoughts? We would have to get deep into what thoughts are, types of thoughts.

I really don’t know. Dogs have different capabilities.

I personally don’t think they think thoughts. They surely have some

@Joseph Maynor Well, that’s a big contemplation.

But, without thinking too hard look at the behaviour and capacity of dogs… they are not thinking much. They, to me, I think, I speculate think have have Dog consciousness and dog cognition and think dog thoughts. But, compared to human thought they aren’t really thoughts likely more feelings. I actually think integrals post is pretty apt.

It depends on what we define thinking to be.  Is thinking abstract or is it procedural, and what is the intersection there?  I don't think we have a clear understanding of what thinking is.

I don't think there is a way for us to test this - is there an experiment you could construct that could give some more data? Even when we scan peoples brains for regional associations, the scans can vary by a substantial portion.

Do you think it is our language that creates this division between object <-> feeling ? Maybe the distinction we're attempting to investigate is partly an artefact of our own conceptual and linguistic framework?

Sometimes how we think about things is literally formed in how we compress or expand on language.

As an example of how language can compress observation, interpretation, needs, feelings and thoughts:

You're always dismissing what I say. You never actually listen, and it's becoming really frustrating.

When I was explaining my perspective and you interrupted me several times, I felt frustrated because I need to feel heard and have my perspective considered. Would you be willing to let me finish before responding?

The above marked in red contains observation, interpretation, needs, feelings and thoughts. So does the blue - but it is the uncompressed version illustrating all these elements concretely. The abstraction alters our perception dramatically (think about how these two phrases would be received). In this way the language we use might a distinction that isn't even there - well, it isn't there is it? huehuehuehue emptiness/nothingness/absolutetruth

I digress - got sidetracked with language possibly altering perception

Quote

1. Language creates distinctions we might otherwise not make

  • "I am angry." Separates the self from the emotion.
  • "I am an angry person." Turns a temporary emotional state into an identity.
  • "The world is terrible." Projects an emotional evaluation onto reality.
  • "I'm experiencing the world negatively." Locates the evaluation in the observer.

Notice how different ways of describing the same experience imply different models of reality.

2. Language encodes assumptions about reality

  • "The sun rises." Encodes an Earth-centered description of an astronomical event.
  • "The sun appears to rise." Introduces the observer's perspective.
  • "I lost my job." Frames employment as something possessed and subsequently lost.
  • "I failed." Turns an unsuccessful outcome into a judgment about the person.
  • "I have anxiety." Frames anxiety as something one possesses.
  • "I am anxious." Frames it as a state of being.

3. Language encodes cultural paradigms

  • "Time is money." Encourages treating time as a resource that can be spent, wasted, invested, or saved.
  • "Climbing the corporate ladder." Frames professional life as vertical competition.
  • "Winning an argument." Frames disagreement as a contest rather than an investigation.
  • "Be productive." Frames activity in terms of output and measurable usefulness.
  • "Normal." Creates an implicit category of abnormality.

4. Language shapes how we conceptualize ourselves

Consider these descriptions:

  • "I have thoughts."
  • "I am thinking."
  • "I am my thoughts."
  • "I observe my thoughts."

Each expresses a different relationship between consciousness and thought.

Or:

  • "I changed my mind."
  • "I discovered I was wrong."
  • "I updated my understanding."

The third frames cognition almost like Bayesian model revision.

5. Language can make an invisible assumption feel obvious

Consider the question:

"Why am I unhappy?"

It already assumes:

  • There is an identifiable entity called "I."
  • Unhappiness is a distinguishable state.
  • The state has an explanation or cause.
  • The self can investigate that state.

-AI

These examples are nice because they point to all of the baggage and role playing were are blindly doing when using language.

@Thought Art I was describing its paradigm not a thinking process.

A dog can have a worldview and a way of understanding everything without thinking at all.

There could be creatures on this planet that have Wild paradigms that look nothing like their own.

@integral something so unique was formed in the connection between man and dog when we domesticated them from wolves.

My girl is trained on hand signals and clicks for commands. Even small head movements. She knows.

Best part of the day is being assaulted by a frenzied, explosive and uncontrollable happy tail to the face :x
