We don't owe anyone or anything jack shit.

You might say this, but I guarantee your actions say something else.

This isn't contributing anything quality to OP's topic.

It is far easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled.

Everything is truth, but there can be misunderstandings within everything which is also truth.

“Everything is honoured, but nothing matters.” — Eckhart Tolle.

Why should we see truth and duty as opposing forces in the first place? Seeking truth is our highest duty, so truth should always be the default choice.

The real question isn't whether we should choose truth over duty, but when and how we should reveal the truth. Timing matters. Sometimes delaying the truth isn't a betrayal of it, but an act of responsibility toward those who may be affected by it.

Truth should never be sacrificed, but its delivery requires wisdom.

The only truth is awareness, so your only duty is awareness.

If you are sick you deny the truth. You have never been sick. God knows no sickness. Sickness is rebellion from truth. You duty is self healing. Of you and others. Then there is only God which is truth. To be sick is to be stuck. You might need another lifetime. I tell you solemnly, you are not sick. By all means take the meds and keep the appointments if they give solace. I don't profess sickness in my world. Were I to see it then I mock truth and I forgive myself quick. Looking around, yes temptations abound - but I am on guard not to succumb. It is all that is asked of me, my sole duty. All is fine, all is dandy.

Why are we taking for granted duty as something important? Duty is just what other people tell you to do.

There is no duty existentially, but there is truth.

@AtmanIsBrahman

That's an interesting point. I think the real question is whether duty matters when it comes at the cost of your freedom, especially when you don't know the whole truth behind it.

In my story, my MC leaves his home because he believes finding the truth is more important than staying behind to fulfil his duty to his people. He does find the truth, but by leaving, he unknowingly exposes his home to danger. In the end, he gets the answers he wanted, but at a terrible cost.

It makes me wonder whether pursuing the truth is always worth it, or whether there are times when our responsibilities to others should come first.

@Willy Phallicus But what if you were born into a duty to protect your people, and you were destined to become their king? What if breaking that duty meant putting your family, your loved ones, and your entire nation at risk? Would you still pursue the truth, knowing the price could be everything you care about? Is the truth still worth it then?

@VeganAwake I can't really answer that, because I don't know. But what if you want to find the truth before you even know what it is? What if you have to leave your comfort zone and abandon your duties just to have a chance of finding it? Would you take that chance, even if you didn't know what it might cost you?

I like the idea that timing matters, but what if the act of seeking the truth itself puts others at risk? What if you have to abandon your responsibilities just to have a chance of finding it? Can the pursuit of truth still be considered your highest duty when other people might pay the price for it?

By the way, I really admire Joy Boy. One Piece is a big reason why I create art in the first place! Do you read the manga? :D

@oOo But what if becoming aware of the truth means realizing that your actions could hurt the people you care about? Is awareness enough on its own, or does it also create a responsibility to consider the consequences of what you do with that awareness?

And I can guarantee that no matter what I say you would just dismiss it if not completely ignore it and cling to your baseless assumptions.

I do things I want to do because I think they are worth doing and no other reason.

In your opinion which you're entitled too even though I don't take it seriously.

Despite your skepticism its still true and relevant to the topic - you or I don't owe anyone anything.

People are free to choose otherwise of course but since the OP referenced truth and how it relates to duty I figured id give them the truth about it.
