Existential Dread

21 posts in this topic

I had been taking a nap in the afternoon and after I woke up I got so fucking terrified that I was gonna die I almost vomited.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Normally I couldnt care less that I was gonna die.
But today is different.
Just the thought of death makes me terrified.
It has calmed down a bit but I am still shaking.
Can someone share thier experience?? <3

(if this is what awareness of eventual death feels like I wonder how fucking mind bending realizing solipsism would be)

Welcome to the club and congrats you are getting old. Fully realizing you will die is both the upside and the downside of getting older. Imagine what it like to be in your 80s when any day could be your last.

That's good most people don't start fearing their death till much later. I would say it's a superpower.

I had a weird dream about Xenomorphs attacking me today. It was scary.

Of course death is terrifying. There's no way around that.

My Aunt has MND (think ALS). I help care for her.

She is dying in front of my very eyes, very rapidly (she was walking 2 months ago, and now has lost the ability to move her legs. Her speaking muscles are now failing).

It is very confronting.

As you get older you are also confronted with your parents passing. This is also hard. Can't describe it.

It is far easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled.

I think a lot of existential stuff comes up when our emotional/ safety needs aren't met.

I appreciate these words, Leo ❤️

The signals between muscles just stop working with MND. Just takes over until the lungs stop. It's a horror.

It's a true recontextualization. I am so grateful to be able to do something as mundane as make the bed. Or operate a door handle.

Probably your body shoting up adrenaline for some reason. Sometimes the body gets stimulated the wrong way.

Something similar happened to me two weeks ago. but it was it was for days and when relaxing. It started while sleeping too.

I read your story and it seems you had it harder than I did

Hearing stories like these really shifts my perspective of life from wanting wealth and whatever to being grateful that I can clean my own ass.
🙏
sorry about your aunt.

Yes, happened to me a few hours ago out of the blue, while watching a movie. Words fail to really describe it. Best I could say is spontaneous realization that I am not really a human, reality is an infinite dream, and there’s no such thing as past, present, and future. It feels like dying. Heart beats at an accelerating rate. I just sat with it and then realized I am also imagining that (before I would have called for help). That experience lasted a few minutes, then I went back to being a human again.

You have random awakenings while watching movies? You'd say such distractions would only keep you in illusion.

sorry about your aunt.

I appreciate it

And very glad you have strong flexibility of mind to be able to embody a different perspective. It is an asset that facilitates gratitude and higher consciousness. That isn't to say your problems aren't as real and deeply serious. They are legitimate too :x

Has also happened while grocery shopping. Or at a restaurant. So it’s not limited to movies.

Those experiences become magical. Like, “oh wow… this is not happening in a physical reality outside of myself.” When I first started experiencing that many years ago, I was like “oh no… i lost my mind. I need to ask someone for help to snap me out of this.” But nowadays, I am learning to not run away from such experiences and to be more curious about it, which has been much less frightening.

You are right. Shouldn't have been so rude.

Aww thank you so much!
The way you are always trying to spread positivity and love has left an impression on me.
I will also try to be as uplifting as possible in my social interactions.
