I deleted Instagram

24 posts in this topic

I've decided to delete this app. I believe it does more harm than good. For what I'm doing I don't need it on my main phone. Has anyone decided to detox fro social media and short form videos? I believe I'm done for good with the app. It is just a gross place and it's not worth being there for me anymore.

yeah, that is legit the way it seems. I plan to upload from my browser. so much easier to ignore all the filth this app peddles.

Same here. I only use it on the laptop, and I have custom TamperMonkey scripts to prevent the explore page from running, and the home page from showing anything (whenever I open instagram it's an empty page — which prevent the algorithm from distracting me).

I can then see messages without seeing any post or content.

I think doing a temporary detox can be helpful if you get triggered by seeing people live better lives than you. Not being on social media is a death sentence to having a big impact in the world. I would take time to reground yourself and then come back stronger when your psyche is less reactive.

What type of content do you feel like triggered you the most?

Frequently using social media is the recipe for a tormented mind.

The algorithm will suck your soul and transform it in fuel for Zuckerberg's mega-yacht.

It's like alcohol, there is no healthy dose for it; anything above zero starts to be harmful. The only way to use it safely is if you could completely control what is shown to you. Still possible in websites like YouTube if you block the home page and other recommendations. Using instagram on your phone is the opposite of control.

Are you purely a consumer or do you post content as well? If you're bored with your life and scroll Instagram to feel better and you get triggered seeing people living their best lives then of course it's gonna lead to the result you just shared lol.

Instagram has made me multiple tens of thousands of dollars. If you're using it wrong blame yourself not the platform. Television was similarly brain rot entertainment much before any type of social media app was released.

@LordFall I'm speaking from the consumer perspective. If you're a creator then it makes sense to be on instagram.

My point is the platform leverages everything it can to hijack people's minds and keep them hooked.

This is framed upon a purely speculation based psychoanalysis with very little basis of evidence based on what OP stated.

It is far easier to fool someone, than to convince them they have been fooled.

It’s not purely based on speculation. It’s the foundation of why most people dislike especially Instagram. TikTok or YouTube serve a different purpose.

Instagram creates a global report card that contrasts your life with others. If you are under performing in life or have a psyche built on victim mindset as opposed to a growth mindset then of course it’s gonna rub you the wrong way.

I teach people personal branding so I’ve had this conversation many times with many people.

Of course. Every business wants to keep their customers. Social media has the added effect of selling us a global online community. If you only use it as a consumer and not to share your life purpose and life with the world then you’re missing out.

The violent videos, troll bait, and constant lies. It is an app selling dreams and largely for voyeurs. I couldn’t care less about someone having more money than me, all the posers pretending they do is what annoys me. On top of that the app sexualizes children, is harmful for teenagers, has nefarious ads selling drugs and AI porn. I realized that the dream they sell which you mentioned is the glue they hold it all together and leech your precious life energy from. You are better off not consuming anything on the app than you are leaving what little views you would otherwise get on the table peddling whatever you’re peddling. Upload from desktop and don’t consume the poison. Anyone doing anything worthwhile with regards to content is on YouTube anyways and that is where you build something if you want an actual brick and mortar business based on quality. I’ll continue on YouTube no problem, it’s a much better platform in comparison to IG. I also deleted TikTok too.

I love instagram. It is not very addictive for me. Because I'm only following people who I know. For me TikTok and youtube is more addictive.

YouTube is far better. By almost every metric of wellbeing in my personal opinion. I find comments on YouTube are better, content is better (but by no means perfect). There is usually much more context on YouTube and even the disturbing stuff has more background to it which allows you to learn from it. Short for is like smoking for the mind.

@Lyubov The algorithm is based off of that you enjoy consuming and who you follow. I get your point of it appealing to the lowest common denominator of human nature though.

For me my biggest use case it running group chats and hosting events. I agree with you that for informational content YouTube is superior. In terms of brand building Instagram is still the king though.

The algorithm is based off pushing your buttons and turning you into a zombie. It’s engineered to capitalize on fear, anger fomo, and comparisons. Half the comments on reels are bots as well if you click on them. I’ve reset my content preferences 1000 times, it always finds a way to funnel me somewhere back to crap. All roads lead to the crap with IG. Obviously its use-case is very specific, so if you’ve chosen a certain hustle it may be mandatory to be there. Like if you’re a dj or promoter yeah you have no other options. I personally have never once nor probably ever will hire or send money to someone I’ve seen on IG. Every service or product I ever found through social media has been through YouTubers. YouTube has some legit real experts and I have had my life racially changed by YouTubers. I can’t say the same about IG influencers. My brand needs it only somewhat and I have a separate account for it anyways which is apart from my content account which feeds me all the shit I don’t wanna see. So all I have to do is upload ads for the service I’m selling and respond to messages and I’m fine, can all be done from desktop. Telegram and word of mouth is just as important for me.

@LordFall you are speculating. You even gave evidence for your speculation. Do you know OP was triggered? No. Hence, speculation.

I don’t like the word triggered but yeah I don’t like the app the same way when my lungs fill with smoke, I don’t like that. There are people who are marks who fall for IG and give the app a ton of their qi. There are people too who have leveraged it and managed to earn cash off of it (for better or worse). If you’re actually in the latter than by all means keep going. It’s pointless for me to be on there scrolling.
