Why is less substance required the more you breakthrough?

Why does a master meditator require less effort than the newbie? Because he has already broken out of Maya.

the pathways are getting more and more familiar to your brain/mind. 

once you have found them, it's a whole lot easier to find them again and again, retracing and deepening them.
