how much does IQ matter

is IQ just a test . is it a test where it only measure things that are unique to that test. or is it a real theory of intelligence. can a 100 IQ guy win nobel prize for physics.

Not much for regular life. Maybe if you want to do some niche academic study, like physics. EQ gets you further in life because people prefer dealing with people they actually like. The more likeable politician is going to get more votes than the smarter but less likeable politician every time.

IQ doesnt mean shit. Cognitive development is real, but IQ tests arent a comprehensive measurement for that anyway.

Check out Leo’s series about ego development too if you havent.

It matters, but it is not a true measure of intelligence. But it does capture some aspects of intelligence.

But there are many other things more important than IQ. So if your IQ is not great, you can still have many other great things going for you.

Cutting-edge science does require relatively high IQ. But high IQ does not guarantee you will truly be intelligent.

IQ tests capture how fast you are at formal operational thinking. For example, if you have high IQ you can probably more easily pass high school exams, play chess, certain jobs like physics and programming. Verbal IQ is good for reading books and learning languages, but you don't need crazy high IQ for that 90-100 is enough to read all the books you need.

IQ don't capture A LOT of things actually. It does not capture holistic relativistic thinking. It does not capture other forms of intelligence like aesthetic, kinesthetic, emotional, naturalistic intelligence etc.

Emotional intelligence is good for Self-Love and find ways to be happy by yourself. Aesthetic intelligence to make art and be inspired by it. A lot of other forms of intelligence out there

IQ tests aldo do not at all capture mysticism or spirituality. It does not capture self-reflection and construct-awareness. It does not capture creativity and imagination.

I would argue that even an 80 IQ guy could be capable of doing rocket science level math if given the opportunity and he would be passionate about learning it.

His psychology would be a much more influential factor than his IQ.

If he sat through school lagging behind in math class, his belief that they cant do math would never let them get good at it. His mind would give up, but not because ultimately he isnt capable enough.

That is way too optimistic.

Rocket level math is hard for me to do, and my IQ is well over 100.

I really dont think so, but i could be biased because i never saw a math example and thought i could never learn that.

You think there is that much difference in two individuals brains? I mean of course there are very different brains, but in my book a regular brain thats capable of walking is capable of rocket science too. It all comes down to psychology and opportunity.

Way more difference than that!

People with IQs below 80 are not even allowed to serve in the military. They would cause more harm than good.

80 IQ is near disorder level. Such a person will not succeed in academia.

It is very important in life to align your life to your strengths, rather than trying to push your weaknesses. An 80 IQ person is wasting time in academia, but could excel in other fields.

Hahaha, hahaha. Aaahh... You have never been teaching anyone, have you? As a math teacher, I can guarantee you, you way overestimate thinking capabilities of someone around 80. The more abstract the topic is, the harder it gets to teach such person. But at this level people struggle with even using a calculator. They struggle to create a strategy to solve basic arithmetics with a help of the calculator. Not to mention algebra.

Such people struggle even with everyday tasks like putting together an IKEA wardrobe with instructions. Not to mention "advanced scientific shit" like calculating the number of cans of paint they need to buy to paint a wall -- impossible challange.

I have also once naively believed it's only a matter of effort and time, a need for a quality teacher. But, being a personal tutor for below average-individuals who have parents with deep pockets, when I was putting in all my effort, I am no longer allowed to hold that illusion.

Its just that for me being naturally good at math or not is a very insignificant difference, but again im not insisting that im correct on this.

But it's not just about math. That's only the tip of the iceberg.

80 IQ will struggle in many other tasks that require reasoning ability. An 80 IQ probably needs a non-intellectual job.

I can see that. Fair enough!

Also i would hate this to turn into a black pill or whatever topic. IQ may be influential, but not even close to be a dominant feature.

There is not one intelligence but multiple intelligences like social, emotional, intellectual and so on. This is all of Ken Wilber’s work.

But there is a general intelligence measure called g.

A dog is less intelligent than a human.

IQ is designed to correlate to g. It does to some degree. People who do well in IQ tests have high g. High g is objectively good to have, but of course it alone is not enough.

Do you think a person can develop their IQ or are they stuck with it? And is it worth taking an IQ test?

Hard to say because I don't have much experience with IQ tests.

I know a person can develop intelligence, which is different from increasing IQ.

I don't see the point, unless you have some disorder that needs diagnosis.

Taking an IQ test can artficially make you doubt and limit yourself. Let's say you score 90. You will now feel inferior and insecure. That is a bad outcome.

People excel at different things. IQ measures intelligence in just a certain way, disregarding all the other gifts we have and expressions we are capable of. You don't judge people by one test nor their potential or the value of their life. There are people who are physically disabled but very smart and would do awful surviving in the jungle and there are athletes with many accomplishments who can barely read at a 4th grade level. Obviously someone with a lower IQ won't be able to do math just as a person in a wheelchair won't squat 500ibs just as a slightly psychopathic surgeon won't ever be able to love his children as warmly as your sweetheart of a mother.
