Carlos Castaneda smoked mushrooms

10 posts in this topic

In the first book of the series, titled "The Teachings of Don Juan", Carlos is introduced by Don Juan to smoking a mixture of 3 parts mushrooms and 1 part of floweres and leaves.

Has anyone tried something similar?
I have read that heat destroys psilocybin, but nevertheless in the book it worked.

Here is the book. You can see the entry of Saturday, 27 January 1962 for some context

Unfortunately we don't know all the exact substances he used.

I have shifted my assemblage point on lsd though. (I literally went to a different version of my city).

His books are more like a tool to do what the old shamans did. Not everything is literal.

I heard he did a shit ton of lsd too.

Thats true.
Its only a book.
But I am courius if anyone tried smoking powdered mushrooms. And in what way.

On the topic of Don Juan, he was very ritualistic and would say again and again how dangerous these substances were and how easy it was to not come back from a trip.
It makes one respect these substances.

I once smoked Amanita Muscaria, felt very nice, balanced, subtly zen-like feeling.

There are disputes over whether any of Castaneda's books are true or just stories he invented.

What's obvious is that it was written by a highly conscious individual if you read it while tripping.

That is very interesting.
Did you add tobacco?
How did you smoke it?

Thanks!

Yes, his books are very different from other books about the shamans of America.
That is one of the primary reasons why people think he wrote fiction.
Some argue that only the first three books are genuine accounts, while the following ones are more imagined.
Either way, they form a remarkably tight and self-consistent system, with no visible inconsistencies, as far as I can tell.
I find his books deeply captivating.

I tried this 20yrs ago and so did one of my friends it never worked.

Heat Destruction: The active psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms, psilocybin, is highly heat-sensitive. It typically begins to degrade at temperatures around 180°C (356°F), whereas the combustion point of a joint or pipe ranges from 600°C to 900°C.

Metabolic Requirement: For psilocybin to produce a "trip," it must be ingested and metabolized by the liver into psilocin. Inhaling smoke bypasses this necessary digestive process.

User Reports:

Most anecdotal reports indicate that smoking mushrooms results in little to no psychoactive effect, often described as a "waste of time".

2. Serious Health Risks

Fungal Lung Infections: Inhaling mushroom material can introduce fungal spores directly into the lungs. This can lead to serious, potentially fatal respiratory infections or inflammation, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or pre-existing lung conditions.

Lung Damage: Mushrooms contain chitin in their cell walls, which does not burn cleanly. Inhaling burnt chitin and other fungal matter can cause immediate throat burning, persistent coughing, and long-term lung tissue damage.

Physical Side Effects: Attempting to smoke mushrooms often leads to unpleasant physical symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, chest pain, and headaches rather than the desired high.

3. Culinary Exception: "Smoked Mushrooms"

If you are referring to the culinary technique, mushrooms (such as Portobello or Cremini) are frequently "smoked" in a food smoker to add flavor to dishes.

Feasting At Home +1

Process: This involves placing fresh mushrooms in a pellet smoker or stovetop smoker at low temperatures (typically 225°F to 250°F) for 30–60 minutes.

Safety: This is a safe and common cooking method intended for ingestion, not inhalation.

And never inject them not saying you would but humans do silly things all the time. Be careful when buying off the dark web.

You can vape psilocin and analogues, you just have to do it skillfully as with DMT or 5-MeO-DMT. Not by randomly burning some mushroom body.
