Ben Gvir's controversial law on Capital punishment for terrorists 🚧

What Israeli opinion leaders, journalists and politicians think about it?

Twitter is exploding, so I will share this over a couple of days.

If we behave like the surrounding societies then what are we doing here?

None of the surrounding societies have death penalty based on nationality / ethnicity

@Raze To be fair, like the institiotonal norms arround us, not the whole society value. For example in Iran more than half are against those values.

I am happy to see your posts and see how there are Israelis opposing this fanatism, but the interview I watched of Israelis talking about PAlestinians, in the majority is not that smooth like these posts here.

Israelis have a very radical view o Palestinians and see them basically as Cockroaches, otherwise they would not vote a racist like Netanyahu into Office for more than 30 years or somebody like Ariel Sharon who was a desaster and a criminal, or somebody like Bengvir or Smotrich.

These posts dont convince me. I am sorry. the husband of my cousin is Israeli, he lives in Germany with here and he staunchly believes Palestinians all belong to Hamas and are therefore a reasonable target to be exterminated.

Hey @Schahin
If you want, you can follow both camps independently - starting with the links above and continue with Twitter's suggestions - and research for yourself, even bring Israeli posts to here and write your impressions. I get what you are saying. This conflict makes many to be hyper suspicious and see the other side in a black and white manner. Although, this is true for part of the people.

@Nivsch thanks for providing nuanced views. I think the centre has moved right enough for that bill to be passed - so can’t just be pin pointed at Ben Gvir etc although he’s the most vile of the lot.

Israel is divided but it’s hard to know how much? I’m just guessing it’s a 1/3 left, middle and right but the left are shrinking whilst the right are increasing.

The centre doesn’t have to be far right but simply fear driven enough to tolerate a mobilised right wing to gain momentum especially post October 7th.

On some issues or views we see in polling that majority are in agreement ie war on Iran being good or necessary, or after October 7th most agreeing Israel wasn’t going hard enough on Gaza even though a week or two in they had already dropped massive amounts of bombs.

It’s tough to know how representative those polls are, but even then - let’s say they are true. I don’t think most Israelis are intently wanting the mass death of Palestinians, but also I think many simply are indifferent and feel whatever needs to happen for survival needs to happen - and that can be equally bad as a result because it enables harmful actions and ends up tolerating the far right due to ‘survival’.

The main issue is the threat perception of Israel remaining on high alert and its security doctrine being maximalist in the region which reinforces that perception. The man security dilemma between Israel and Iran needs resolving for things to really settle - and then the Palestinian issue settled too.

The issue is we now see Israeli heads talking of a new Sunni axis as a future threat (Turkey, Qatar, Saudi/Pakistan). If threat perception always remains high that will ever ensure insecurity of Israel. This may be partly due to past trauma (understandably) but is being weaponised by other interests (domination / imperialism).

@zazen My goal in this thread and in the self-investigation I suggested is to show the real emotions and motives of Israelis in the most raw manner possible, and from that let everyone think however they want. This is why I prefer here to just let the evidence speak for itself or to speak about it directly. Anyway still I really appreciate your nuanced way of looking at the things.

Well I saw a news today, that talked about an Anti-War protest in Tel Aviv which was violently scattered.

I cannot remember of protests against the Genocide in Gaza though, but you can tell me because you are there on the ground and have the opinions.

I just saw a few interviews where the destruction of Gaza was always approved, most of the times. It's very sad.

I live in Germany and I know that Germans are total hypocrites towards these issues, they talk about human rights but that only applies to whenever they see fit. So i can without a doubt say, that Germans are very complicit in these atrocities exactly as they were in the last century with other atrocities. There is nothing I could bring forth of the Germans that could prove differently, sadly so.

There were many protests against the Gaza war, but it was because of domestic reasons and the hostages, the overwhelming majority didn’t care what happened to Palestinians.

Currently most support the Iran war but it is declining because of domestic reasons, polls show only a small minority care what happens to Iranian civilians.

Keep in mind what they present to the world is different from how they actually feel. For example in this thread he posts tweets from Israeli politicians denouncing settler violence, in reality, none of these politicians have called for dismantling the settlements and have actually voted for annexing some.

I will just remind you that these posts are originally in Hebrew. I translate the page with Chrome before sharing it here. So at the beginning they come to show an inner discussion.
