Haven't thoughts about that distinction, but as I think of it, it's always a melody for me as well, to the point that when I want to find some new things to listen to and I'm not sayisfied with results, I always add "melodic" keyword in search to try to filter non-melodic tunes.

But there must be a rhythm to. I don't like when it's all over the place without some pattern when I'm listening.

It's always certain balance of rhythm / melody that my ears find fascinating.

Sometimes when I try to dance to a tune, it's the rythm that gets me going, but all the emotions are coming from the melodic part.

The question is what we notice first - not so much which is more important 🙂

Melody/rhythm is codependent arising.

Melody usually takes longer to play out since it tends to ramp up.

I never thought about this, but it would lead me to think we may notice rhythm first. It might be the 'hook', so to speak.

My interest is piqued by rhythm, but I often stay for the melody.

Your playlists, Leo, often emphasize melody. So I am not surprised by your preference as elicited above 。◕‿◕。

A tone, which is the rudiment of melody, is literally rhythm, just sped up. So it's impossible to perceive melody before rhythm.

In the example above, sax vs drums.

Oh i see thanks

I would say both it really depend of the song

Usually i would say melody when the beat is kind of simple

When i dance the intro of the melody often give the immediate feeling or vibe of the song

But some hidden gems song have sometimes really creative and good beat who are able to get the melody in a totally other dimension and the beat alone is a melody in itself i feel

The melody is the skeleton of a song and the beat the muscles more or less thick

"Row row row your boat" is a great way to see the difference between melody and rhythm.

This is my experience from 20 years of dancing.

It truly also depends on my moods, feels, vibe for the moment / day. If I am being emotional, I look more for melody. If I am more in fun mode, then rythm.

But when discovering new songs, I often skim the songs to find Alignment / Harmony in the song.

Melody is way more important.

Melody is what makes the tune worth listening to. Rhythm doesn't make or break the tune, it's there in the background doing its job, working for the melody.

If the melody isn't great the tune isn't worthwhile no matter how good the rest is.

I have quite a bit of experience with Music Production. Big part of my Life Purpose. Here's my take...

Rhythm is the baseline. In a certain sense, it's actually more important because it's sort of a fundamental ground-level you need to build up everything else in the track. In general, your Melody is going to work in tandem with the Rhythm. A different Rhythm might actually "recontectualize" the same Melody, because different notes are being emphasized.

A great Melody is what you need to make a good "Genius-level" composition, but with a mediocre rhythm is still not gonna turn heads of the common viewers. You kinda need that highly-polished or professional beat to attract the majority of people, and then maybe a few with more "refined tastes" will recognize the genius of the melody underneath.

But personally, I'm more of a Dance Music addict, and my mind loves to think of amazing and unique melodies for my own tracks.
So I like to think I try to get the best of both worlds when it comes to Melody vs Rhythm

Nobody buys a song for its beat.

Just like nobody buys a cheeseburger for its bread.

Good Example..to show that you're wrong.

Typically more people eat bread on its own than they eat cheese or a burger patty on its own.

A cheeseburger is like a "Complete Package" where both is synthesized into a superior experience.

Yes, typically people remember the meat and cheese more. My point is, you gotta have good ground level first. That's why I said it was more important, from a certain perspective, not objectively.

Look at the song Happy Birthday and try to find the melody and rhythm.  There's a lot of melody in that song with minimal rhythm.

We generally sing Happy Birthday out of conformity.

What's most important is what sells the song.

Rice in sushi is necessary but it's not what sells sushi. It's not why people love sushi. It's not why people keep buying sushi.

It's funny that we're mentioning food because there's melody and rhythm in food too.  It's analogous.  But anyway, this is probably for a different thread.

Check out "Sound of the Sea".
