What is the goal of Academia?

I plan on going to University and pursuing a degree in Mathematics, but i wanna be clear, and when i say clear i mean VERY clear, on what my goals and focus should be regarding my future in the system that is Academia. Mainly on the kind of research that is needed and theorem's that could actually reconcile spirituality and Science. I'm strongly aware of the influence of logic and rigor in our rational dominated society and i wanna approach this the right way.

If you have any ideas, Leo or anyone honestly, you should leave a response. I'm quite sick of the institutional bias towards Spirituality and Mysticism, even though ironically the greatest Scientists of all time stuck their noses directly into these sorts of things, there's still a stigma around this stuff in intellectual circles. And they call themselves "Scientists".

Good luck. I think I just failed my first chemistry exam in uni (haven’t gotten the result yet but it felt it went bad). It’s so fricking hard. At least where I live. 
 

Theres something valuable to doing hard work. It builds discipline. You really have to dig deep into yourself to find the strength to keep working at it, even when it feels you don’t understand it.

Oh man, I remember being in your shoes.

I wanted to go into academia, to be a professor. But when I began pursuing spirituality, a chasm opened up in my mind between academics and science.

At first I tolerated it. I created my own theories and philosophical systems a out the science I was doing. But I let those go as they didn't have much practical value.

Chose not to go into academia further than a Masters degree. Then left the field entirely. Went from switching paradigms of how I looked at my field to switching paradigms about how I looked at my whole life.

Today I'm no longer a scientist, at least exclusively. I'm not saying this will be you, but don't be surprised if being mystical takes you down a different path. 

To answer your question more specifically, I think Leo has books on his book list that "reconcile spirituality and science" as you say. Read history of mathematics books, Ken Wilber books, and do psychedelics. Then contemplate everything you learned and you'll figure some stuff out. Thats how I did it with science
