Living On My Own For First Time!!

20 posts in this topic

I just got accepted for an apartment at a country club. Rent is going to be about $1000 after utilities. I won’t be able to move in until September. I was wondering if you all had any general advice on apartment living for first time. It seems like a nice apartment complex with a pool, golf course, and gym. The apartment building is 2 stories so I want to know if you all recommend being on the top floor or bottom floor. I’m excited for this part in my personal development because I have lived with my supportive parents at our beautiful home in the woods for my whole life. I’m excited to be fully independent and face adulthood.

Thanks.

Happy for you. Top floor. Stairs = exercise. Adds up over time. Plus you might get a view.

Top floor means less bugs but warmer temperatures, especially in the summer.

Personally I said fuck them bugs get me to the top.

Thanks guys. I’m excited. It will add 5-10 minutes of commute to work. But not a big deal.

Hell yeah - this is a big milestone as an adult!

I fucken LOVE living alone. To the extent my most recent relationships weren't even cohabiting. Just had our own spaces to go back to - bliss for introverts or for those who value privacy.

You're going to learn:

  • To take action and learn priority
  • You are a fucken slob. That bit of pasta that fell on the ground and you cbf? Well, your gonna have to pick it up when it falls, or later when it's a crusty, shriveled turd stuck to the floor with the red sauce. NB you might super clean, maybe I am betraying how revolting I am? lol
  • How much connection and social interaction you prefer. When you remove all the typical family interactions or housemate chit-chat, you learn you valued it more than you realized, or you don't miss it at all.
  • To craft a pace and tone of life that you prefer.

There's more, of course.

But overall, this is going to be a HUGE growth phase for you.

<3

Deal with the issue now, on your terms, in your control. Or the issue will deal with you, in ways you won't appreciate, and cannot control.

Nice to hear that man! Big step.

Be sure to keep your apartment organised and clean, this is key. You will be a lot happier when you see beautiful stuff around so keep it clean and add some art, flowers, nice furniture.

Couple more tips:

Plunger. Emergency electricity/plumbing contacts. And a locksmith.

Locksmith is a big one - it is the easiest way to scam the living daylights out of people. Think about it, if you need an emergency locksmith you are in a desperate position of great disadvantage. Find one local that is actually legit. Many online will charge you upwards of $1000 (for about 2 minutes work) by adding fees on to their initial callout quoted through the phone. The scammy motherfuckers know exactly what they are doing and will rip you off in a surgical manner.

Last tip - give someone your emergency key, or have a coded padlock with a chamber nearby. You need to have a plan in place for when you are inevitably in this position!

I believe if it's an apartment building with an office and onsite  workers, they'll have access to his unit if he's ever locked out, if that's what you're referring to about the locksmith.

I still have a key I can lose. Larger complexes have a concierge (mine does) who can grant access control cards in emergencies to the general building. I would HIGHLY doubt they would have individual keys to apartments. It may be different in other countries.

I do not know specifics for OPs circumstances, so it is more just general advice.

@Alexop Absolutely bottom feeder behavior. Scammers really exploit your sense of urgency. If you don't have urgency/desperation due to a situation, they will attempt to create a false sense of urgency. Locksmiths are one of the worst to exploit you. Always properly vet the ones you find in searches (god help you if you still use Google).

Oh DAMN really? I am sorry to hear but not surprised at all. I know all about locks, mechanisms, electric mortices, maglocks and access control systems. I know how complex and intricate they are, and most people have no knowledge and rely on the locksmith to be honest. It's a huge position of power dishonest people exploit.

I'd say 7/10 of my mates have been scammed out of desperation from locksmiths. And these guys are sharp and educated. Scammers are just crafty and sly.

Yea, I had lost my keys and called a random person on Google. He charged me almost 500 euros for a lock that was worth like 50, and when I realized it wasn't normal, I threatened to file a complaint over the phone for abuse of power; it wouldn't have led anywhere, lol, but apparently it could work.
He simply said that "it was his job" and that we couldn't see each other because he was far away.

I later learned that it was basically the Albanian mafia lol.

My father knows this well too and a normal lock is actually easy to replace, I could have actually broken my lock myself and replaced it with a random one.

I should do this as a student job ahah.

Yuh, if you don't want to go through Google reviews as well. Look on your local subreddit if there hopefully is one! If there is, likely someone has already asked about locksmiths. If you see a decent number of people chiming in with good experiences on a place, it's pretty solid.

Just do the classic Google search "Reddit locksmith *your city's subreddit name*"

I like this method for local recommendations in general. I'll always use it to find a mechanic or something similar.

Yeah, I guess it depends on the circumstances. Here in the US when I lived in apartments they always had extra keys that could access the apartment but only for emergency or if locked out and was free of charge. This was years ago and things could have changed now with all the digital stuff going on. So yeah, general advice there.

You're right, though, locksmiths are brutal and the business can be a rip off. Just don't break into a locksmith shop, they'll fine you double in court and charge you triple just for showing up. Hehe

Thanks guys. I worked on my assertiveness and asked them more questions. They have a 12month lease and a 6 month. I asked the difference and they said the 6 month adds $75 to rent.

When I actually move in, I plan on taking a video of the place or pictures just to cover myself.

They have a no smoking policy, so if I was to do DMT one day, I will have to plug it and not smoke it.

All sounds like good stuff! Ya never know how they are with your deposit when you're trying to move out. Landlord fuckery is common. The six month lease is a nice option even if you don't take it, having to sign a whole year contract drives me a little batty every time.

Up the butt, as god has willed it🙏
