Socialist may defeat Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Democratic Primary

Meet Zohran Mamdani:

https://www.zohranfornyc.com/

He is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and a current candidate for the Mayor of New York City.

This election is significant because he managed to close the polling gap between him and Cuomo by a significant margin. He used to be behind Cuomo 30+ points in the polls and now is now behind less than 10% points in the most recent polls.

Even Vaush thinks that this guy is a genuine socialist and not a social-democrat, as he wants to create more city and employee owned enterprises in NYC, such as and most notably, grocery stores.

If he actually wins this, it will be a huge victory for the socialist movement in America. A member of the DSA being the mayor of one of the most iconic and economically significant cities in the world? Eugene V. Debs would be so proud.

But this is precisely why all of the centrist corporate wall street Dems, and have all endorsed Cuomo, despite him being shockingly bad due to his past sex abuse scandals and corruption. Cuomo is only popular because of his name recognition, and he is very well established in the Democratic Party's corrupt senior leadership, so the dinosaurs who make up that leadership don't want to see one of their chess pieces fall.

For the centrist libs, maintaining their positions of authority, enriching themselves through corruption, and serving corporate interests is more important to them than serving the poor, which is why all of the big moneyed interests have donated to Cuomo's Fix the City Super PAC, including:

Billionaires: Stavros Niarchos, Alex Blavatnik, Peter Schoenfeld, Henry Swieca, Bill Ackman, Barry Diller, John B. Hess, Matt Hulsizer, Kenneth Langone, William Lauder, Daniel Loeb, Deborah Simon, Alice Walton, Dan Loeb, Glenn Dubin, and Emma Bloomberg.

Other high-profile donors: Billy Joel, Michael Kors, Stacey Bendet, Beth Dozoretz, Laurie Tisch, Antonio Weiss, Abby Levy, Jessica Seinfeld, Peggy Drexler, Jill Kargman, and Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel.

Corporations and Organizations: DoorDash Inc., Fisher Brothers Management Company, The Durst Organization, Halmar International, Lyft, Including RXR Acquisition Corp, Centerview Partners, Charter Communications, and SkyBridge Capital.

There actually is a candidate in third place, Brad Lander. Lander is very similar to Cuomo in regards to being a centrist, but doesn't have the scandalous baggage. The very fact that Democrats endorsed Cuomo instead of Lander proves what corrupt snakes they are, who are more interested in preserving their leadership class than they are in electing qualified candidates.

Really hoping Zohran wins this one. It would be a huge moral and political win for progressives in this age of chaos.

I didn't think he had a chance originally, but now it looks like he might have a real shot.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out either way.

Incredible! It looks like it’s over for Cuomo! He even conceded that he lost tonight!

That’s good news, let’s get a new socialist wave coming to America. Corrupt capitalists pretending they’re the only reasonable ones around are getting really boring.

This is genuinely a huge deal.

The mayor of NYC is one of the most powerful mayor in the entire country, and has a sizeable amount of influence on the national stage.

A young principled populist with fresh ideas and an unapologetic rejection of both Trump and the corrupt Democratic gerontocracy is exactly what's needed right now.

Scandinavia.

I asked Grok about Scandinavia:

"Scandinavia—often cited as a socialist success story—isn’t purely socialist. Countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark operate mixed economies with strong welfare systems, high taxes, and robust public services, but they’re firmly capitalist at their core. Private property, free markets, and entrepreneurship drive their wealth. For example, Sweden’s GDP per capita is around $60,000, largely from private industries like tech and manufacturing, not state-controlled means of production. Their welfare models work because of high trust, homogeneous societies, and wealth generated by capitalism, not because they’ve abandoned it.

Playing devil’s advocate, I’d argue socialism hasn’t truly 'succeeded' in Scandinavia because it’s not socialism in the classical sense—centralized control of resources and production. These countries rank high on economic freedom indices (e.g., Denmark’s 2024 Heritage Foundation score is 77.6, among the freest globally). Their systems rely on capitalist efficiency to fund redistribution, not collective ownership. If anything, Scandinavia shows capitalism’s flexibility, not socialism’s triumph. Pure socialism, as seen historically in places like the Soviet Union, tends to stagnate economically due to misallocated resources—something Scandinavia avoids by staying market-driven."

Just ignore them. Change the question. Call them out on their bullshit. “Socialism,” “capitalism” etc are just buzzwords at the end of the day. Just point out how popular these policies are and how they’ll help countless people.

We don’t have to play the geriatric neoliberal’s game.

None of the Scandinavian countries are properly Socialist. They are Capitalist economies with large welfare states.

Well it shows you that something in a more socialist direction is not as scary as some people think.

What does true socialism mean to you ?
