15 posts in this topic

Hey guys,

I have fallen in love with Breathwork recently and I am going all in on studying and exploring its potential and benefits. I’d love for you to share some of your favourite resources and techniques, teachers, etc that you have come across.

People I am learn from right now include:

1. Dan Brule

2. breathe with Sandy (YouTube) (life changer).

3. Breathe with David (YouTube)

4. Yogalap Breath of Life Course (website)

I am also insterested of course in Qigong, Krya, and Kundalini Yoga.

There’s a book called “your body, your voice” by Theodore Dimon if I recall & it’s about the voice but there’s a good portion on breathing.

Here’s the basic idea of the breathing with the voice aspect removed: Normal inhales & absurdly slow exhales. Pretty simple eh.

I couldn’t tell you the first thing about the physiological observables but it’s a kind of breathing that I practice habitually all the time now not just for singing. It calms you down & grounds you. I don’t know there’s something about increasing your tolerance to co2 & having your default posture be a fully expanded rib cage & diaphragm.

Doing “sss” or whispered “aaaah” during exhales is optional but helps to get the mechanics down. Most of the effort is in holding the exhales & letting them out slow. The inhales should be effortless & swift.

Has anyone here tried not breathing? I have been holding my breath for years. Kinda based.

@Thought Art Not too much I can add to what you already posted, I've mostly done breathwork from "breathe with Sandy" too, which I think is amazing in terms of video quality, music and guidance.

Anyway I think you should consider going to a holotropic breathwork workshop. This stuff goes really deep and can produce experiences similar to those on psychedelics. The group setting plus the choice of deep reaching spiritual music really adds a lot to the experience.

@Paradoxed I'm not one of those that subscribe to the practice of breathing.

Do something better with your time.

@Thought Art

James Nestor wrote a book where he basically tried to put together a "theory of everything" for breathwork and synthesize how all the different techniques come together.

Oxygen Advantage by Patrick McKeown is interesting for a more scientifc POV, very Buteyko inspired.

Also, Brian Mackenzie talks a lot about breathwork from more a fitness POV:

"Finding your reason can be so deceiving, a subliminal place.

I will not break, 'cause I've been riding the curves of these infinity words and so I'll be on my way. I will not stay.

And it goes On and On, On and On"

Breath holds are fun. In as long as possible. Out as long as possible. Catch your breath. Repeat.

You are missing out. Pranayama is really changing my life. So grateful I’m committing to it as a core practice and aspect of my teaching.

This practice is great to start with. I do it often when I find stress builds up. Then, I’ll do some acupressure and qigong too.

Breathwork is proven scientifically to be important for health and high performance. Also, many musical traditions have Breathwork for a reason.

@Rigel That’s really cool. Actually I’ve been doing vocal exercise with a vocal coach and we do a lot about breathing. Same from my singing coach.

Holding and prolonging breath can literally change the context of what you focus on.

If you forgive the lack of seriousness, let me share the Hinokami Kagura, the "Dance of the Fire God" Breathing Style.

Yoga, Qigong and even many Martial Arts as Tai Chi in their forms and techniques focus and channel breath into movement.
