Should I take this gambling job?

I got a new client that wants me to build a sports betting app.

I could take 120K salary for the job that would take between 5 months to a year to build or I could get a reduced salary with a 15-10% earnings from bets made on the site.

Obviously, this isn’t aligned with anything I would enjoy building or doing lol

So I have  to decide whether to take the percentage or take the money.

The guy says he could get 1000 active users the first month. But he has no marketing strategy after that besides traditional marketing pathways. So this isn’t an influencer who’s gonna like set up 15 social media profiles and start pushing on TikTok.

I don’t know if I’m getting screwed with this.

I would Ask AI what are the pros and cons of each choice and decide.

It depends on your current situation - if you urgently need the income, it might be a good idea to take the offer, build up your experience for your resume, and continue looking for better opportunities in the meantime. If you have the flexibility to job hunt a bit longer, it’s definitely worth exploring roles you’re more passionate about or would genuinely enjoy. Also, optimizing your LinkedIn profile, sending out more applications, or even doing some direct outreach via email can open up more doors  Best of luck!

Depends, it’s safer with the salary tbh. Too bad you couldn’t do salary and still get a percentage. Maybe you can negotiate.

I did the math and if I take zero salary I should get around 30% from all bets on the gambling site (where I build it for free). But if I keep my salary reduced I could get maybe 10% to 15% + 50k for the work.

I just don't trust that they're going to deliver on marketing, I feel like 90% of startups fail. And this will be one of them lol

Exactly I could build it myself, the problem is I have to do my own marketing and I need to pay for my own gambling licenses. But gambling license in Ontario is 100k or else your whole thing is illegal. If you want a Gambling License for New York it's in the Millions.

I could help you with the marketing angle, I work in media and do stuff with models, hosting a fashion show in a couple weeks. I was thinking about building a gambling website eventually since it would be a unique way to cashflow a modelling agency. There's perhaps some grey zones ethically but also it makes sports more entertaining so what's wrong with that? I couldn't care less about a sports game if I don't bet on it.

@LordFall the problem is the licenses for example in Ontario. You have to pay $100,000 to legally allow people from Ontario to use your gambling app. That means no one else in the world could use your app unless you buy the license in the state or country that they’re in.

Every state has a separate license that you have to pay for every year.

If a user from New York uses your app to place a bet you get a massive fine if you don’t have a New York license.

@integral Yeah if the guy is willing to put the money for these licenses then he's serious and has done the research. I think it could be reasonably simple to market as long as there's a budget.

You’d need to know his marketing strategy, budget, who the target audience is, projected betting volume and bet amounts, etc. Is there a cap on your profit-sharing? What is the reduced salary if you take the profit- share route?

I’d try to figure out how to make it so that you make a minimum of 120k either way you go. Does the client have any prior business success? 

Does he already have branding and a web presence? 

What’s your responsibility? You managing the entire project from scratch and subbing out or are you planning on building it all yourself? Design and dev work? Frontend, backend, mobile apps, web app, etc?
