@Michael569 this is great help, thank you. All the replies here are helpful, thank you to everyone.
What I forgot to mention is that I’m a normal dude with a job. I didn’t go to university, I’m not an academic. I was originally saving up to buy a house, and I’ve probably got enough to buy one. But now that seems pointless.
There are people out there living amazing lives and they aren’t working a normal job, they aren’t saving up to buy an overpriced house.
Deep down I think I have a weak ego. How the hell do I gain a healthy ego when all I’m doing is working and saving up for a house? There is literally no growth there at all. I talk to people, I try to be nice and friendly to people, I’m not going out partying anymore or doing crazy stuff. So yeah, that’s it. And every now and again I think about suicide simply to get out of this mess. It sometimes seems like a valid way out. Because the way the world is going it can’t be good. As a normal dude with a job - it ain’t great.

Or am I getting lost in other peoples fun exciting lives? I know that most people don’t quit their job to go backpacking around the world. It looks so fun and I’ve had friends tell me about all the sex they’re getting and how much free time they have whilst travelling.

I still exist as an ego. I haven’t reached the point where life is magical and we’re all one and there isn’t any monkey mind going on.

I don't have clear cut answer what you should do brother. but felt like you have to travel in order to get experience or feeling whether you like or not.

@Michael569 well if you’re in the UK like me then you know the deal with house prices over here, it’s mind boggling.
Not all my friends have gone travelling, only a few, and they make it sound so good. I will have a word with my boss to see if I can go on a sabbatical but they’re trying to get rid of people so I doubt I’ll be aloud back haha.
Maybe I should stop listening to those travelling friends? It’s hard to think for ourselves these days isn’t it? And the idea of ‘settling down’ scares me, especially in this day and age where literally nothing is permanent. And yeah, my social skills aren’t great - but who’s are? Talking to random strangers in the street doesn’t sound like a good idea to me.
Do you coach? Your replies to this thread have been the most helpful. You seem to know a lot of stuff about life.

You mean to tell me that you got enough money to buy a house, straight up? No mortgage? That's a very good position to be in.

If you don't care about the house itself that much, you should just purchase an apartment in some relatively good city location (up to you where and how to find it out) and rent it out to some stable established family (stable families and couples make for the best renters in my opinion, ideally childless) for a relatively lower price. Or as high as you could get it, just make sure it's competitive and it covers energy bill and other basic bills, and something on top of that obviously. Then you're going to have double income streams, you realize that right? Now you'd be able to save up much more money (and faster) and then maybe quit your job and go traveling. Or whatever you wish to do.

If you just go traveling then you'll burn all that money and may end up with nothing. And you'd still have to return to your 9-5 job. And all of that just because your friends are evoking some fickle emotions in you? That's very irresponsible choice in my opinion.

You could buy a house but then who would really want to be a house tenant? It is better to rent out an appartment in a city because most young people (young couples) would want to live in a city. Even if for a limited ammount of time.

The point of earning money is so that you could do something with it that you like. If you're just working and not doing anything else, then wtf.

Imagine for a moment, dear friends, that you are Conciousness, and that you have only this one awareness - that you are at peace, and that you are.

@NewKidOnTheBlock what I meant was that I’ve got enough money for a deposit on a house in the UK, which means a fair bit of money. You couldn’t buy one outright unless you were a millionaire. I’d be paying it off over 30 years.

@Salvijus what to buy with money saved though? Material objects? Dinosaur skeletons?

Seems like you're laking vision in life. Some higher purpose. Something more than survival. Then you'll naturally know where to invest that money.

@Salvijus I was half joking. Maybe I do need a life purpose or something.
Have you found your life purpose and are making a living from it?

To me having a serious life purpose seems so rare. Even if everyone on this forum says they’ve found theirs.

My passion is related to spirituality and conciousness work. I see myself becoming an energy-spirit type healer of some sort, I'm not quite there yet to make a living out of it but I'm still young. 27yo. Things are unfolding very nicely tho in that direction.

I feel like it should be natural for everyone. It's not something one has to invent, it should be in your DNA itself. Sometimes traveling gives an opportunity for people to discover their deepest longings when they're no longer constantly distracted by survival drama.

Ok, so that's a whole other thing entirely. Then I would probably travel if I was your age, why not. Life is short

Just make sure your future is financially secured. Don't just blow away all the money. Invest a portion of them somewhere

If you could travel frugally (and live a fairly frugal lifestyle in general), then who knows, those money you've saved might suffice for a very long time

It reminds me of Hajj in Islam. A few people in my neighborhood went to Makkah to perform Hajj and also Umrah.

But after they came back, it seemed like nothing had changed—their character, habits, etc. Mostly, it just changed how people perceive them and gave them a new title.

For me, traveling gives new experiences, and I often reflect on some of what I did while traveling and the things I learned from it. It also helps improve skills—like my driving skills, how I talk to new people, visiting new buildings, and so on. There’s a lot of practice that’s more effective than just reading about it in a book. So, it’s worth investing in. It all depends on how you travel—whether you waste it or use it.

I’ve never been outside my country at 28, but I have plans for the future. So far, I've been exploring other cities in my country because there’s still a lot to discover here.

Right, folks. I’ve been thinking a lot recently and came to the realisation that there is no escape. Maybe travelling is an escape. How is it possible to escape from work and somewhere to live? There isn’t a way - is there? Even the countries I’d travel to - most people are working with shelter over their heads.

However - it worries me that I will completely waste my life. The mundane boring life does suck and I wish there was another way. But if this is what most people are doing, and I’m doing it too, then so be it. Maybe I have to accept it?

I know this post is a bit old now, I apologise for bringing it to light again for anyone here that wishes to reply.

Also - I should be grateful for what I do already have. Even though my current life is totally shit, it could always be worse.
It’s funny to me now that last week I was in a panic when I first started this topic, I was on the verge of giving up altogether. And then now I’m a lot better and I’m grateful for what I have.
Sorry folks!

What is it that makes you think you are wasting your life? What is the alternative? What are the values you are striving towards?
