Five Guys At A Party.

16 posts in this topic

I have an observation for you.

Your at a party and you notice five men standing around in a circle having a conversation. Your there alone so decide to join in.

The first guy talking is muscular and physically toned and fit. You can easily tell that he must work out religiously and might even be taking steroids. His whole conversation is about his regiment and how he is a vegan and eats nothing but healthy foods.

He turns to you and asks. "How about you? You work out?"

You reply. "Oh... sometimes. I'd like get into it, I just can't seem to find the time."

The buff guy slaps you on the back and hands you a business card. "Well I'm a physical trainer and I'll help you be as huge as me in no time flat, get in touch."

The second guy is clean cut and physically attractive. He has a $100 haircut and he's wearing the latest fashions and expensive cologne. He begins talking about all the women he's been hooking up with ever since he joined this new hookup website.

He says. "Man it's as easy as pie, if you get my drift." He looks at you and asks. "What about you? Do you want to be able to pick up any woman, any where, at any time you'd like?"

You reply. "Oh... yeah that'd be cool."

The womanizer guy slaps you on the back and hands you a brochure. "Just call this number, we have a meeting every Thursday, you'll never be alone again."

The third guy is wearing a tie and an expensive Italian suit with wing tipped shoes. His distinguished wire glasses hang around his neck by a thin gold chain. He  starts talking about all the money he's making in the stock market recently.

He says. "Gentleman, I can turn a $5,000 investment into $20,000 profit practically over night."

He looks at you and says. "What about you sir? Would you like to get richer than your wildest dreams?"

You reply. "Oh... yeah well who wouldn't?

The broker guy slaps you on the back and hands you a folder. "Just look this over and call me, remember time is money."

The fourth guy looks as though he hasn't shaved in a few days. His t-shirt is wrinkled and hangs outside his jeans and one of his shoe laces are untied. He produces a bag of unknown pills from his pocket.

He looks at you and slurs. "Hey man, you want to try one of these and go to the moon?"

You reply. "Oh... yeah, but I better not. Not here anyway, maybe some other time, thanks."

The druggy guy slaps you on the back and places a small envelop containing one pill into your pocket. "Here dude, that's for later, my pager numbers on the envelop if you want any more."

The moral of the story is this. Your ego has helped you make four new friends. Unfortunately though, you now have a friend that will hound you to go to the gym even though you have no real interest at all about working out. You also have a new friend that is going to try to convince you that picking up girls and having casual sex with them is awesome, when in reality you just want a nice girl to get to know and maybe fall in love. Another of your new friends will now try to convince you to invest money you never had and make you feel worthless for not having it. He may even try to get the contact numbers of the people you do know that have money. This last new friend is someone you definitely don't want to get to know, especially since in reality you didn't do drugs in the first place.

Had you not let your ego take over the conversation and been truthful instead, you could have avoided these situations in the first place. Take control of your ego, take control of your life.

Is the fifth guy the "ego"?

@Catanio  I was hoping someone would ask that. The answer is ..... The fifth guy was much like ourselves in this forum (in search of awareness, truth, enlightenment). It was clear that these five men would not be a positive attribute in his journey and growth. He simply walked away from the group altogether, with the knowledge that none of these men would care or understand anything he had to say anyway. Thanks for asking.

I call the third guy so that I can have enough money to pay the fourth guy for the pills.  Then call the first guy to help workout so that when I hang out with the second guy I look good.  Then on Sunday I call the fifth guy to confess all my sins!

@ayokolomo  Unfortunately the stock broker with all the money in reality is in debt up to his ears. The drug addict was thrown in prison for selling to minors and ironically Muscles ended up sharing the same cell for roiding out on his girlfriend. Casanova missed your call because of his addiction to porn and finally, what makes you think the guy knowing the "truth" wants to know yours? Funny though, gave me a good chuckle.

Sort of reminds me of the biggest problem of capitalism - always trying to sell you the future version of yourself. You can never be fine as you are, because it isn't as profitable.

@Emerald Wilkins I agree. Stupid capitalist, I wonder at what point in our planets history did greed and possessions become more important than compassion for others and contentment for life in it's most basic form?

It's a rhetorical question. No history or political lessons required.

I think the greed aspect came about way before capitalism. Capitalism is just the form that it takes in modern society. I think it is part of people's lower nature. But on a brighter note, I actually think that we've become more humane as human society evolves. I actually would go as far as to say that we're a lot more compassionate in the modern era, than in times passed. I'm generally optimistic about the future.

You've made 4 caricature characters, why did you become friends with salespeople in the first place!? =)

Replies in the story were weak and why did you allow them to give you patronising back slaps?

I can't connect it with ego, it's more like main character was pussy to convey his true values.

And I see more ego in your comments, demonising characters you made up yourself and proving your righteousness over them. ;)

@kalter000  You got it all figured out. Give yourself a pat on the back. Or would that be too patronizing?

@DanoDMano I didn't mean it to offend you, I just didn't understand the purpose of the story and what conclusion it holds. It looked like fighting with non existant enemies, although I might be too fast on making judgements.

That's actually how I would reply. I just made 4 amazing new friends who are all sucessfull n their respective fields. Joke's on them, I gave them all my own business card. I'll coach them to be even more sucessfull and they will refer me to their friends. Soon I'll be rich and also buff and a drug addict. I'll end up like The Son from Hotline Miami 2, which is a perfect ending to a perfect life. lol

I think the saddest part of this story is that what the four guys were advocating are really positive stuff. It's genuinely good to be physically fit and healthy, attractive to the opposite sex, and rich, and even addicted to your own consciousness. The problem with these four people is that they are ultimately distracting themselves from a psychological truth that might scare themselves shitless. The truth that it is impossible for the person to be happy. A big delusion among modern society is that it is possible to be happy as a person. This means that everything a person does, no matter how significant it is in his life, is psychologically impossible to make one achieve happiness. The person also cannot know happiness.

Here's a twist though that I'm sure a lot of spiritual seekers have realized, we are not people. This entity we know as "the person" is an ultimate fiction and therefore everything this person knows is a fiction as well. If a person thinks he is happy or something has given him happiness, that happiness is a fiction and will soon to be shown as an illusion. However, as existential beings, it is very much possible to achieve happiness. In fact, we are already happy, not only that, our entire being IS happiness. People have used other words for this same concept of being: freedom, love, God, Christ, whatever you want to call it. The reality is that the person is always hiding itself from the true nature of reality. Why? Because in order to see this happiness, the person has to die. And it has to die as soon as possible. The person is all about survival. Without distraction, clarity remains. Clarity will dissolve this person as if it were a vampire under the sun!

These are all shortcuts, isn't it? We can't achieve across the board. Leo even said this in his most recent clip, How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others. One can't find his/her life's calling (life purpose) with all these distractions. Friends? Real friends know who you are and what you want out of life. They don't try to distract you.
