The "What to do if Trump tries to ignore the election" megathread

13 posts in this topic

Ok, so I know I've said that we have to treat a Trump victory as inevitable and try to fight that, but as time goes on and more things go against Trump's direction I feel like there's actually a good chance Biden could win this (but remember, voting is how this will happen!!) I guess I have upgraded my prediction from "cautiously pessimistic" to "cautiously optimistic."

However, that doesn't mean there aren't still dangers, the biggest of which is what Trump might do if he loses. I think it might be worth it to start thinking about how each of us can make a difference to help make the transition to a Biden presidency easier if Trump tries to start shit. There is a lot individual people can do if they're prepared and have actions in place to assist this transition.

Please feel free to post ideas and resources here. Things like arguments that can be used for pro-Trump family members who are worried about a "marxist globalist takeover" if Biden wins. Maybe things like videos  and links on how democracy works and the benefits of a Biden presidency. Things like how to write to congressmen about voicing your support for democracy and due process.

I think America is in for a shift come November and, hopefully, if its a Biden win, then we can use that shift to create a more conscious world, rather than one of fear and division.

Here's a documentary by Vice on how mail in voting does work:

This is worrying me. Can he really steal the election?

This can't be real.

I think he will try. Whether it'll work or not will be up to a lot of things. That's what this thread is about.

Just one idea. . . For all previous elections, the winner was declared on election night or early morning and the loser concedes that night or next day (except for Bush v Gore). Yet with a big shift to mail -in voting the winner may not be known for several days or a week. That is a big shift in expectations - including media. Having a big one night extravaganza has been great for ratings, yet they may need to prepare the country that it may still be too close to call on election night, if only half the ballots have been tallied.

I think one of Trump’s hopes is that he will be slightly ahead on election night and declare victory. The mail in ballots will be overwhelmingly for Biden. As Trump starts falling farther and farther behind, he can claim he was the victor and now Dems are stealing it with fraudulent mail in ballots. . . If the expectation is that we may need to allow a few days after election to count ballots, it favors Biden. If Biden was the victor on election night, his lead would continue to grow over the next few days of mail in counting.

I also find it VERY encouraging is Michigan Governer Whitmer signed and executive order to allow counting of mail in ballots a day before Election Day. This will favor Biden and accelerate when Michigan is called for Biden.

My prediction is that Trump will refuse to concede the election and will take it to the Supreme Court where God knows what will happen there. If the SC sides with Biden, I imagine the military will have to escort Trump out of the White House, all while US streets are overrun with protestors the likes of which we've never seen.

I certainly do not want any of this to happen and don't say it lightly, but I just can't see it playing out any other way. Trump has basically already declared the election rigged, and I'm sure Fox News will back him up with tons of crazy "fraud" stories that will stir up conspiracy theories for years to come.

We're in uncharted territory here. I don't think anyone really know what's going to happen, but Trump will almost certainly contest the election results, and even if Joe Biden wins in a landslide I would expect Civil Unrest during in the immediate aftermath.

Also lots of ignorant posts by right wingers quoting '1984' because of the conspiracy theories vomiting out of the mouth of the candidate who ran the country in to the ground and then lost the election.

He makes a good argument, and if it came down to a popular vote (or at least a fair election without widespread voter suppression amidst a pandemic) I'd have more confidence in his analysis.
