I'm going to use totem in witchcraft practice..

This totem will involve a cylindrical round hollow pole.

This pole is like an upright telescope

Take a piece of Paper. First fold it to make a double side. Fold it again to make a double side to make it thicker.

Write totem on top. Now start drawing a totem and fill in with paint.

A totem is a collection of symbols. This rectangular stacked symbol collection either tells a story or can be a group of relevant tarots stacked together or a mixture of both tarots and sigils mixed to create either a story or describe an event, form a guiding manual for the day or week, or a representation or reminder of something important like a witchcraft God or a collection of spell or a single spell.

Once the totem card is ready, drop it into the tubular hollow pole and insert and stuff into it.

Now draw another totem and keep inserting all handmade  totems into the totem pole.

Keep this totem pillar pole at the altar as a reference marker. Refer to it anytime and remove totem cards or mini totem pillars and read them out loud.

If there is a very important totem, carve it into wood, soap or candle wax or clay or draw on a crystal like rune stones  and stick together to make a more permanent totem.

Raising a garden menhir or runic stone or totem

As a witchcraft practitioner you can even raise a small statue or totem or a rune stone looking like a menhir in the garden.

Like the Bjorketorp rune stone.

A totem may look similar to a rune stone in symbolic meaning and erection.

Symbols and sigils can be drawn on these stone structures.

A garden can be made meaningful and attractive especially for Halloween with such structures

Add some Harry Potter appeal..

One of Sweden’s great mysteries surrounds a monolith called the Björketorp Runestone (DR 360 U)(Pronounced Bee-york-kuh-torp). The nearly 14 foot (4.2 meters) stone is located in Blekinge, Sweden, and forms a stone circle with two other blank menhirs, with several other solitary stones in the surrounding regions. It is covered in a Proto-Norse language of Runes which contain a foreboding warning about the stone. One side of the stone reads:

“I, master of the runes, conceal here runes of power. Incessantly (plagued by) maleficence, (doomed to) insidious death (is) he who breaks this (monument).”

The runes on the other side of the stone translate to “Prophecy of Destruction” or “Prediction of Perdition”, which may be in reference to a warning pertaining to the stone’s destruction. In other words– my words– Don’t attempt to destroy this stone or you will surely die.

markings on the stone, made sometime around the 6th or 7th century, are consistent with Elder Futhark Runes– the oldest form of the runic alphabet, which was used by Germanic tribes between the 2nd and 8th centuries. The name “Futhark” comes from the first six rune names– F, U, Th, A, R, and K. This runic alphabet also contains twenty-four runes, which are most often expressed in three rows, or groupings called ætts (pronounced “eats”), of eight. This written language was later replaced by the more simplified version called Younger Futhark. As Younger Futhark became more predominately used, people forgot how to read Elder Futhark. Norwegian scholar Sophus Bugge, was able to decipher the Elder Futhark runes in 1865, bringing a lost language back to life and making the translation of the Björketorp Runestone possible.

Many scholars disagree on the purpose of the Björketorp Runestone, though most of those theories relate to some form of marker or shrine. Some scholars have suggested that it is an ancient border marker between the Swedes and the Danes. It has also been thought to have been a fertility shrine or a shrine honoring the Norse god, Odin (All Father). Probably the most predominant theory surrounding the purpose of the monolith is that it was a burial marker, either for a real grave or as a memorial, which necessitated the use of a prophetic warning to prevent the stone’s removal; An archaeological investigation of the area conducted in 1914 did not reveal the presence of any human remains, so the purpose of the stone is still under speculation. Even though the purpose of the stone is unknown, the stone’s mysterious curse seems to be real… at least according to local legend.

When the stone was thought to be an impediment to the land, which a local man desired to cultivate, its removal was attempted. On a day of calm weather and with no winds, the local man piled wood around the stone, so he could heat the stone and then crack it by pouring cool water over the stone’s surface. As the man set fire to the wood surrounding the stone, a gust of wind blew the flames away from the stone and towards the man, setting his hair on fire, and extinguishing the blaze around the Björketorp Runestone. The man, unable to quench the flames, died in terrible, flaming agony.

Whether you believe the story of the curse or not, the stone’s cryptic message and the local legend surrounding it still gives one pause– Why is the Björketorp Runestone still standing after over 14 centuries?

Not only do crystals come in all sorts of colors (amethyst, rose, aquamarine) and serve different intended purposes (improved sleep, added protection, attracting abundance), but they’re also found in many different shape formations. Just like the colors of the crystals convey unique meanings (since they often signify what type of stone, exactly, it is), crystal shapes also matter. Experts say the structure of a crystal doesn’t change the type of energy it emits, but the shape does affect the way you receive said energy.

“Crystal shapes can help to amplify your intention and your experience with them,” says Heather Askinosie, crystal expert, co-founder of Energy Muse, and author of CRYSTAL365. “Choosing a crystal shape that pairs well with your intention will enhance and magnify your transformation.”

Below, a few experts weigh in to help demystify the different crystal shapes, what they mean, and how to use them. It’s great intel to note next time you find yourself roaming the shelves of a metaphysical shop in search of a new crystal or simply perusing your own crystal collection.

Learn what 7 common crystal shapes mean—and how to best use them.

1. Cubes

If you need some grounding vibes in your life (don’t we all?), a cube-shaped crystal might be the perfect gemstone companion for you. Askinosie says meditating with cubic crystals in your hands can help you connect to the energy of the Earth. You can also place them in each corner of a room to protect the space.

2. Pyramids

Crystal pyramids are said to be powerful for manifesting your desires. “Their strong base acts as an anchor for your intention,” says Amber-Lee Lyons, chakra expert and founder of Chakra Girl. “The apex of the pyramid sends the intention out into the universe. Whether it’s a self-serving stack of cash you want to manifest or to send out love to the collective, pyramid crystals will take you to that next level.”

3. Spheres

“The crystal sphere reminds you that you are a part of the greater whole connected to all the energies in your surroundings,” Askinonsie says. “You can imagine that you are holding the world in the palm of your hand.”

The Zen vibe these magical crystal balls give off also makes them great meditation buddies. Amber-Lee Lyons says adding a small one to your crystal collection that fits nicely in your hand while you meditate can also double as a mini massage ball to relax any tense muscles.

4. Tumbled stones

Consider tumbled stones as stepping stones into the wonderful world of crystals. “Some may call them basic, but I call them practical,” Amber-Lee Lyons says. The small, smooth crystals tend to skew inexpensive and easy to find online or at your local crystal boutique.

But don’t be fooled by their size—these travel-friendly stones are indeed powerful. Amber-Lee Lyons says what’s especially great about them is how mobile they are. You can easily carry them in your pocket or purse, or even tuck them inside your bra to help you connect with the energy all day long. Having one so close, maybe even touching you directly, can act as a reminder of your intention.

5. Crystal points

As its name suggests, a crystal point keeps you sharp and on point. It’s your BFF whenever you need to stay uber-focused on something. Mariah K. Lyons, crystal healer and founder of ASTARA, says to use these powerful points for manifestation purposes. “Write down a mantra, affirmation, or desire on a piece of paper,” she says. “Fold the paper and place the crystal point on top, pointing up. This acts like a pyramid, directing all the energy from the intention on the paper upward into the cosmos and radiating out into the surrounding environment.”

6. Hearts

Heart-shaped crystals are not naturally occurring; they’re cut and polished into this shape, but they still radiate a strong love energy. Mariah K. Lyons says to meditate with a heart-shaped crystal to activate your heart chakra. “Focus your energy and attention on your heart and imagine filling your heart with pure loving light,” she says. “Imagine the light fills your heart and weaves in and out clearing any old wounds and traumas and bringing healing and peace into the heart and body.”

7. Clusters

This is, as you’d expect, a cluster of crystal points in their natural form (and they’re oh-so pretty to look at thanks to their sparkle and mystical vibes). “A cluster is great for bringing unity to a space,” Mariah K. Lyons says. “Place a cluster crystal on your family dining table, living room table, or other communal spaces in the home. It’s also great to place in conference rooms in an office or places where people come together. It helps create a space of open dialogue and community.”

Foil hat... Take a ribbon and tie a rectangular silver foil box hat or folded foil on head. Folded foil held in place by ribbon. Start ceremony

Start binding rope as paper rope with staples or foil rope.
You can even write sigil on paper pieces used to make the creeper rope.
This represents synchrony of life.

Lag sigil

Inactivity sigil

Non initiation sigil

Inertia sigil

Obstruction sigil

Non completion sigil or cessation sigil that is sigil or unsuccessful completion

Termination sigil or for abrupt truncation

How to proceed with initiation and completion of spell

1.....Wear Elaborate head gear. This is general initiation

2......Drink gold water.. This is general initiation

3.....Start initiation spell. Take jar. Put initiation sigil, the main sigil or symbolic sigil along with indicator sigil. Start with soap stick. This is initiation ceremony

4....Visualize spell upto completion

5......Along the way, Add offerings like Shells leaves, dried flowers, papers, herbs, pearls, jewels, foil chits, cinnamon sticks, all sorts of witchcraft items

6....If you do not want to use a spell jar start with a silver cauldron. And put a main and initiation sigil into. On a piece of paper, you can write both the symbolic or main sigil side by side with the indicator sigil.

7.....Start binding rope of sigils or give offerings of different sigils into silver foil cauldron. Either just bind a rope or give sigil offerings or both or bind the sigil into a rope. This binding and or offerings represents synchrony and sequence or progression of spell.

8....There are 2 types of sigils here. One is symbolic sigil or main sigil. Like a sigil for financial prosperity. And an indicator sigil which indicates either the progression or degradation or termination of a spell.

9....At the end there will be 3 things either completion or cessation that is failure or termination due to an obstacle. Cessation and termination are similar but they differ in a way that the spell was suddenly abandoned or could not be done exclusively due to the obstacle. Cessation means that the spell was never initiated in the real sense or could not be completed within the given time due to laziness or lack of momentum of keeping up with it or eventual loss of steam or interest or enthusiasm or lack of sequence or bungled sequence, unable to keep up with the sequence and synchrony. Whereas termination is because of some unforeseeable obstacle suddenly halting it or causing it to be abandoned or withdrawn.

10... Completion stage.. put the completion/termination /cessation sigil on the rope or give it as offering.

abandon the rope and throw it out if the spell is complete

11.... Keep some portion of the rope in case of termination /cessation. Do not wear the Headgear in this case

12... if the spell is complete then wear the headgear again as a mark of completion.

13..

14.... wear the head gear anytime a major milestone is achieved during the spell progression.

15.... Mark completion by placing a completion sigil along with a soap stick in the spell jar.

16....Thus one soap stick represents only initiation whereas the presence of 2 soap sticks in a spell jar represents both the initiation and successful completion of the spell after which the spell jar can be completely emptied for the start of the next spell.

17....This whole ritual contains all the elements of a process or spell from initiation to synchrony /obstruction  to completion.

Another method of combining totems and tarots is to take a big tray and place rectangular soap bars one by one beside each other and then placing the tarot or sigil or totem can then be fixed into them by using a small wooden twig or a toothpick. Thus it remains fixed or put and easily be replaced by another by removing the stick and sticking another tarot on it...

Also if soap bars are not needed then just use the cardboard pasted tarots on the tray or wooden board and create a tarot sigil totem chart..

Sigil represents a symbol

Tarot represents a full picture rather than a symbol

Totem represents a set of symbols arranged in a line to represent an event or message or sequence

Drank my spiritual tea early morning and had these wonderful insights during meditation

- What your mind is trapped in is a delusion and what you see around is an illusion. You need to be free from both.
- Live a toxic free life today
- You have years in front of you. Imagine the progress that you can make in another full decade or 10 years and Visualize that right now everyday
- An inspiring person improves his life in increments over a whole period of time. And at the end there is a huge difference. Monumental difference. Maybe this person is not successful in the eyes of the world because success is a social standard. But this person is an inspiration. He is not a video game character. He is not fancy or Julius Caesar or a warrior out of a novel, colorful or passionate looking like a movie character just an average nerdy looking simple person yet so inspiring by their thoughts and actions and by their simple way of living a fuller inspiring life
- People who look photogenic or movie like or act like that are abnormal because they are born in abnormal conditions. Only abnormal conditions like war create abnormal personalities and we call them heroes because we can't be like them. In reality they are puppets of an abnormal system. They are not role models at all because we don't need those conditions to create such people.
- The reality around you even though it's a reality is a false reality. Learn to live in true reality. And true
- And true reality is like beach pebbles. Pebbles represent us and our lives. Because pebbles are in basic unnoticeable colors like dark black grey white  blue sand colored, dull everyday colors nothing striking and passionate like pink, orange, red, yellow, purple, turquoise.. Yet there are people who are molded by those conditions and they look red. When we look at them we find their lives interesting and find our own boring and we want to be them which is basically conforming to something abnormal. This is what society does to us every day. These pink stones are nothing but the reality warped by social illusions making the pebbles turn red with layers and layers of red paint placed on the pebble to make it interesting.. All these layers of red hot paint is social programming and creating of social illusions that begins to deceive and color our lives. Remove this red paint and it's the same grey pebble again. It's important to be free of this red paint plastered on by social illusion. Be free. Live how your heart wants.
- Live free from false reality. Live in true reality. True reality means being yourself, improving your life everyday, improving your self everyday, doing your own thing but also knowing what is good and what is best for you, not doing whatever I want but knowing that it's in my good interest. Stop living in false social paradigms.

Be a straight shooter in life.  Self honesty is the key.

Be self honest.

Sometimes have a sit down and do a bit of self assessment as to what is going on in your life and what can be done and what type of reality you are dealing with.

Life is really like looking through a telecope of 3 lenses. One lense shows the reality of your life which is observation. The other lense shows the analysis of it. And the last shows what solutions you can use to tackle that reality. That's all.

Be an inspiration not a success. Be real and honest. Stop living in a false reality.

Always remember that every person plays a distinct role in this world. And they constantly evolve.

What you are at a point of time is only a reflection of your continuous evolution..

I feel like Selena Gomez's latest song is very inspiring, "Lose you to love me"..... Felt special because I could relate so much since this is my huge breakup phase.

During a recent interview on the  Zach Sang Show on Oct. 25, Selena dropped a bomb when she told everyone that she wants Justin to hear her new tracks. “Yeah, I do [want him to listen],” she said. “And here’s the whole point: being able to say something on your own, and being able to say something that actually is beautiful. For me, my intentions are never evil. They just aren’t. I don’t even know how to do that. My intentions can be a bit snappy but I always want to come from a place that’s genuine, and when I feel like some things haven’t been said, then, I get to turn things into art.”

I feel like i resonate so much with the last lines. Sometimes i get snappy too. I'm not very fond of Selena Gomez but these lines are true. I get snappy too but like she said one has to come from a place that's genuine.

I feel this is a phenomenal song just because of the title. I have grown so much throughout my relationship. All the passive aggressive abuse.

When you lose someone it can create a guilty feeling , like you did something wrong to deserve it but at the same time it can be a liberating experience. When you lose someone you can discover yourself. Its a new birth. A rebirth of the soul. Along the way you realize how much your self needed you.. How much you neglected yourself. You lose that person and come back to yourself and discover the new version of you, more liberated, more confident, more free.

A similar thing happened to me. I don't care enough what he might want to say anymore. I feel like I can focus so much on myself. I can appreciate myself more than ever. You feel independent. You feel like you don't need someone's approval. Most importantly you feel liberated and unbothered unphased by whatever that person wants to do. The jealousy, anger, frustration, vengeance leaves the  body and it is replaced by a calm satisfaction in oneself. You are happy being you. You are more centered, not scattered. You are focusing on your goals, on your life, on your problems and your path, your purpose and your well-being, your happiness, your joy. It's like your boyfriend is cheating on your back but you could care less about that ducker and you just set out to a bowling alley to have fun with your friends. Or you call up your office buddy to discuss an important project or you are discussing with your therapist the next best method to suit your needs which will help you deal with your psychological issues so you can make progress. All in all the focus is only you. This is suddenly so liberating. No more worries about what someone else is doing, or this secret insecurity that they might be doing better than you, this tug in the chest, this knot in the stomach, this itch to know everything about that person to know what they are upto and this hate vengeance complex that brings this hurt, pain and rivalry. You feel liberated. It doesn't matter even if that person was moving on and being successful or happy, you just don't want to live suffocated in that little space of hurt forever. You are not going around cautiously trying not to get triggered or offended but you end up getting. You are no longer a victim of this hurt cycle anymore. You are free from that cycle that begins with judgement.

I don't think loving people go on word ammunition rides.

You weren't a straight shooter when you said to me that you were having  a weed plantation and a future in robotics. Because thats the course you wanted to complete.

Now prison is shit huh.  It wasn't shit when you were in it. That time you were just being a victim.. .

I call out on your hypocrisy and it hurts. You weren't such a straight shooter when I callled another guy handsome..

You are a piece of....

Oh you are so loving that you love attacking.

You won't be a straight shooter if someone called your son autistic..... Would you..

When your shit is handed back to you, you cant handle it so don't dish it out.

A loving person doesn't hurt.

Why should I give 2 shiits about you.

You are a narcissist nut job. Im not surprised that you are a hypocrite too. Because guess what narcissists are big time hypocrites. They turn every principle to serve their agenda. Basically convenient behavior. Do everything to serve your convenience.

Not only is time wasted on you. Even love is wasted on you.....

You did everything to serve your purpose and you used every guilt trap you could use.

Let's remove your chill factor with all the weed and cigarettes and drugs you take to keep yourself chill. Then let's see how chill you are.

Insecure is you who needs to attack others to cover up for your insecurities.

You are not a fragile person. Fragile is your  ego. Fragile is me who suffered so much being with you,who started showing signs of degradation you piece of...

Today is October 28. It was a party at home by my mom. I got tired because I was the only one doing all the work. So i kinda fell into a slumber. When I woke up i thought about my dad and i cried a lot. And then I thought about him and how much of damage this guy had done that i will have to undo..

I mean i built him up. And he broke me down. That pretty much sums it up.

Because guess what when his fist doesn't work, his words do the ammunition.

I know domestic violence is really the worst thing. But there are other ways to hurt. That's called psychological and emotional abuse. And that can hurt equally. And there is no way to recognize it at first and it takes time.

Narcissistic, self centered, predatory, hypocritical, insecure, abusive, passive aggressive and emotionally draining control freaks. That's the favorite strategy a cult leader uses is to abuse a person to control him.

Taken enough of your emotional aggression

You know how it feels when you have a shit*y ex boyfriend

Guess who was the real bit*h...

A part of my spiritual growth focuses on this insight that i had a day ago in which i said to myself that i want to be a saint, not like the messiah but a Saint in terms of a sage or a positive spirit. A blessing spirit that continues into eternity. That continues to have a big heart. Whose spirit expands and whose spirit is cleansed everyday. And when the spirit is cleansed it gets brighter and brighter every day. Like bright white light. It spreads. And when the person dies, this bright spirit continues to inspire and bless people who connect to that spirit's energy. I think such a spirit that is eternal and immortal and spreads its benevolence is a saint. And in my spiritual journey i want to achieve that. I want to be that saint, i want to be that spirit that is immortal and lives through eternity and blesses people who come her way.

My inspiration comes from a mexican guy who is already a folk saint by his presence and he is Jonathan Legaria Vargas. And i feel for him and i feel his energy. He is such an inspiration. He was a good person who died and his spirit is eternal and his spirit is a saint.

One can pray to his spirit for that peace.

I think during massive spiritual growth and cleansing the person creates an ocean of tremendous peace. The peace is so deep and so spread out like an ocean that every thing in the world is going to be like a stone dropped into it that creates ripples. It won't change the ocean. The peace won't be destroyed by any negative energy and by any demonic or evil force because it's so deep. I think this is spiritual cleansing, attaining that sense of deep peace that cannot be destroyed. And this peace then transforms the spirit and makes it eternal and makes it saintly.

I think its similar to the Buddhist principle of the "jewel is in the lotus" or om mani padme hun. This quote reminds me of the journey towards spiritual cleansing where you cleanse yourself gradually and your spirit becomes brighter and more peaceful and attains a sort of Calmness and beauty of the ocean.

In my future spiritual journey i will focus more on spiritual cleansing that helps in the ultimate spiritual growth towards becoming a benevolent eternal spirit which i will call a saint and attaining this sainthood is the ultimate part of the spiritual journey. Its almost like enlightenment.

I am not fully aware of spiritual cleansing.

I think that when you do spiritual cleansing it appears like a cloud of dark smoke and you are rubbing on it with your Positivity and slowly the dark cloud begins to clear up and then you can see this white cloud forming out of it but there are still some dark portions or spaces within this white cloud that need further scrubbing. And as you gradually scrub it off, the darker parts clear away and the cloud gets shinier and whiter and brighter. Each time that you want to dispel that dark part you have create a more benevolent, open, positive, wise, matured protective spirit. You have to keep cultivating these divine qualities to dispel those darker parts. Your qualities will dispel that.

A favorite music of mine that resonates with my philosophy.

If you are the person who is trying to feel better every day and it's a big struggle just to feel better every day then free your mind...

This song represents to me ultimate truth of being free and setting yourself free from this whole world which is in itself a massive cult and we are slaves to this world cult. And we have to be labor away like the guys in the video. And when one day we break all these social illusions created by the world cult we will be truly free. And for that we only have to free our mind...

Lyrics

Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove
Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove
Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove
Everyone's the same, everyone is trying to
find,
Some kind of better life to take them all the
way
Everyone one can play, everything is
intertwined,
Every colour of the rainbow, watch it break
the rain
Free the night and you can find the truth

Free your mind and you can find the groove
Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove
Time can slip away, time can tell a
thousand lies
Take away the heart's disguise and you can
find your dreams
Tell me that you'll stay, tell me that you feel
this high
Never ever wonder why the night is what it
seems
Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove

Time can slip away, time can tell a
thousand lies
Take away the heart's disguise and you can
find your dreams
Tell me that you'l stay, tell me that you feel
this high
Never ever wonder why the night is what it
seems
Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove
Free the night and you can find the truth
Free your mind and you can find the groove
Free the night, free the night, free the night..
Free your mind

Start binding rope as paper rope with staples or foil rope.
You can even write sigil on paper pieces used to make the creeper rope.
This represents synchrony of life.

I have been curious about freemasonry for a while now

The Masonic lodge is the basic organisational unit of Freemasonry.[1] The Lodge meets regularly to conduct the usual formal business of any small organisation (pay bills, organise social and charitable events, elect new members, etc.). In addition to business, the meeting may perform a ceremony to confer a Masonic degree[2] or receive a lecture, which is usually on some aspect of Masonic history or ritual.[3] At the conclusion of the meeting, the Lodge might adjourn for a formal dinner, or festive board, sometimes involving toasting and song.[4]

The bulk of Masonic ritual consists of degree ceremonies. Candidates for Freemasonry are progressively initiated into Freemasonry, first in the degree of Entered Apprentice. Some time later, in a separate ceremony, they will be passed to the degree of Fellowcraft, and finally they will be raised to the degree of Master Mason. In all of these ceremonies, the candidate is first obligated, then entrusted with passwords, signs and grips (secret handshakes) peculiar to his new rank.[5] Another ceremony is the annual installation of the Master and officers of the Lodge.[2] In some jurisdictions Installed Master is valued as a separate rank, with its own secrets to distinguish its members.[6] In other jurisdictions, the grade is not recognised, and no inner ceremony conveys new secrets during the installation of a new Master of the Lodge.[7]

Most Lodges have some sort of social calendar, allowing Masons and their partners to meet in a less ritualised environment.[8] Often coupled with these events is the obligation placed on every Mason to contribute to charity. This occurs at both Lodge and Grand Lodge level. Masonic charities contribute to many fields, such as education or disaster relief.[9][10]

These private local Lodges form the backbone of Freemasonry, and a Freemason will necessarily have been initiated into one of these. There also exist specialist Lodges where Masons meet to celebrate events, such as sport or Masonic research. The rank of Master Mason also entitles a Freemason to explore Masonry further through other degrees, administered separately from the Craft, or "Blue Lodge" degrees described here, but having a similar format to their meetings.[11]

There is very little consistency in Freemasonry. Because each Masonic jurisdiction is independent, each sets its own procedures. The wording of the ritual, the number of officers present, the layout of the meeting room, etc. varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.[11][12]

The officers of the Lodge are elected or appointed annually. Every Masonic Lodge has a Master, two Wardens, a secretary and a treasurer. There is also a Tyler, or outer guard, who is always present outside the door of a working Lodge, to secure its privacy. Other offices vary between jurisdictions.[11]

Each Masonic Lodge exists and operates according to a set of ancient principles known as the Landmarks of Freemasonry. These principles have thus far eluded any universally accepted definition.[13]

Candidates for Freemasonry will have met most active members of the Lodge they are joining before they are initiated. The process varies between jurisdictions, but the candidate will typically have been introduced by a friend at a Lodge social function, or at some form of open evening in the Lodge. In modern times, interested people often track down a local Lodge through the Internet. The onus is on candidates to ask to join; while candidates may be encouraged to ask, they are never invited. Once the initial inquiry is made, an interview usually follows to determine the candidate's suitability. If the candidate decides to proceed from here, the Lodge ballots on the application before he (or she, depending on the Masonic Jurisdiction) can be accepted.[14]

The absolute minimum requirement of any body of Freemasons is that the candidate must be free, and considered to be of good character.[15] There is usually an age requirement, varying greatly between Grand Lodges, and (in some jurisdictions) capable of being overridden by a dispensation from the Grand Lodge. The underlying assumption is that the candidate should be a mature adult.[14]

Additionally, most Grand Lodges require the candidate to declare a belief in a Supreme Being. In a few cases, the candidate may be required to be of a specific religion. The form of Freemasonry most common in Scandinavia (known as the Swedish Rite), for example, accepts only Christians.[16] At the other end of the spectrum, "Liberal" or Continental Freemasonry, exemplified by the Grand Orient de France, does not require a declaration of belief in any deity, and accepts atheists (a cause of discord with the rest of Freemasonry).[17][18]

During the ceremony of initiation, the candidate is expected to undertake or swear (usually on a volume of sacred text appropriate to his personal religious faith) to fulfil certain obligations as a Mason. In the course of three degrees, new masons will promise to keep the secrets of their degree from lower degrees and outsiders, and to support a fellow Mason in distress (as far as practicality and the law permit).[11] There is instruction as to the duties of a Freemason, but on the whole, Freemasons are left to explore the craft in the manner they find most satisfying. Some will simply enjoy the dramatics or the management and administration of the lodge, others will further explore the ritual and symbolism of the craft, others will focus their involvement on their Lodge's social side, perhaps in association with other lodges, while still others will concentrate on the charitable functions of the lodge.[19][20]

The most commonly shared rules for Recognition (based on Regularity) are those given by the United Grand Lodge of England in 1929:

The Grand Lodge should be established by an existing regular Grand Lodge, or by at least three regular Lodges.

A belief in a supreme being and scripture is a condition of membership.

Initiates should take their vows on that scripture.

Only men can be admitted, and no relationship exists with mixed Lodges.

The Grand Lodge has complete control over the first three degrees, and is not subject to another body.

All Lodges shall display a volume of scripture with the square and compasses while in session.

There is no discussion of politics or religion.

"Antient landmarks, customs and usages" observed.[30]
