Touchscreen on laptops is stupid, thoughts on the new MacBook PROLED XDR?

7 posts in this topic

Has anyone here seen the new MacBook PROLED XDR?

Like Steve Jobs mentions at the beginning of the video, people will get fatigued.

But that’s not my main point, my point is that I find it so unnecessary and weird to work around with UNLESS it is like the iPad Pro where you can easily detach the keyboard.

I’ve been waiting for years so they can eliminate the notch at the top of the screen, I do like the Dynamic Island (like the iPhone) so everything with the design is what I wanted but, paying extra $1K for this design ($3K total + taxes) is very bunkers to me. It’s everything that I wanted but the touchscreen is so extra, probably will wait for the next year…

I’m sticking on buying Apple cuz I use iPhone and I do like the ecosystem of sending files easily to any hardware via folder, etc.

Windows latops have had touchscreens for years. It's mostly a gimmick unless you have a very specific use case.

Instead of touch screen they should have made an Apple latop with a hinge that swivels and folds 180 degrees. That is useful.

Have you tried it or are just imagining that it would be stupid? I had Lenovo Thinkpad with a touchscreen for years before getting my current Macbook and I miss it. It's very convenient once in a while to click on buttons with a quick touch of the finger instead of having to use the trackpad.

Steve Job's point is only half good, indeed the horizontal keyboard is the surface that you'll mainly wanna use but having the touchscreen able to be used for like 20% of interactions made a big difference for me. It would definitely get me thinking about upgrading the one I have right now.

💯

Maybe if you're drawing on the screen with an e-pen it has its use.

For that, I use an iPad (I enjoy drawing and creating diagrams with the Concepts or the Freeform apps), but then I have to open the same document I might be accessing originally from the Laptop, and sometimes wait for it to sync.

As an artist I need to move as efficient as possible and make quick changes, and adding a keyboard so my hand would travel more, takes more time to do my changes. My changes are so precise that I use the Apple Pencil 80% of the time so this screen is worthless (cuz it doesn’t support even apple pencil).

It’s adding extra micro seconds to my workflow you follow me? That’s how much I value my time as a creative, and paying extra $1K for just a 20% use? Nah, at least $500 would’ve been aight or make it completely optional.

It would be useful if screen is detachable from keyboard and it becomes an Ipad when detached.

Else as Macbook and Ipad user I see no usable usecase for it.

If it were free or I were rich it doesn't hurt to have it
