Should I delete social media apps?

15 posts in this topic

I feel like delaying social media apps would be a good decision, but on the other hand, it might make me feel even more isolated. I honestly don’t know what to do.

If you use it in a meaningful way so it’s perfectly fine. Even Leo has instagram.

Make sure to learn how to use it wisely and not just doom scrolling too much

Deleting my Instagram was the best choice I ever made. You just have to be proactive about reaching out to friends via text, but the peace of mind is worth it!

I use the web versions on mobile, they are a pain to use, but it’s far less addictive.

I made 2 Alarm clocks in a day when I have permission to use social media. That worked pretty well.

Unfortunately addiction to social media happens because it hijacks our need for social company and our need to get information. We are wired to spend the time in groups.

It would not be much of a problem if the social media we use is more advanced, but today it is designed at a childlike level.

This is the kind of "social media" that I deem advanced.

It just feels more right than Instagram.

You're looking at the problem of social media inaccurately.

Intelligence defines the way you interact with something.

If you forge relationships with a phenomenon that degrade your intelligence, naturally eventually you'll find lower utility.

If you see other people doing the same thing, you may be influenced to copy those behaviours and then double down on rejecting the phenomenon once you recognise the bad effect.

This is the case for social media, despite their being many intelligent ways to engage with it.

If intelligent conversations were not possible, I wouldn't bother.

But I have extremely intelligent friends, so its a non sequitur, as I've made many friends across the planet through Facebook that I've taken IRL that I otherwise wouldn't have.

To address the visibility of the terrain, you're forced to accept in-group and out-group realities in the context of what demographics you can presently enter to satisfy your use of social media productively versus can't.

Most people struggle to accept these things and that's natural, which is precisely why people who deep down are needing social needs fulfilled with confirmation bias validate the assumptions they've found it in some alternative with any positive signals they get.

This is precisely why intelligent people as well can fall into and or even create cults literal or memetic (I.e. red pill); its an ego defense for at the very least, solving a frustrated social economy.

Finally their self-worth can feel validated.

This is also the exact same pattern you see with dysfunctional uses of social media, people that literally turn it into an attention economy; and there's no way around it for many demographics. In this sense, social media by and large will always have negative impacts relative to certain uses, i.e. using it as a source of self-esteem or social replacement, but like any tool, there's always a nail for it.

@oOo I wasn't dismissing the use of social media. I can find value in it in certain ways too.

To me is obvious why I open my cellphone to check on Instagram. They've capitalized on a need. But Instagram isn't just an utopic tool to share pictures with the world. Maybe that was the case in the first year 20 years ago. Those mofos are abusing the attention of billions nowadays.

@Human Mint The world wants you to live life like a Pokemon; predetermined, predictable and ultimately, locked in a Stockholm relationship of your captor after "it" captures you, whether its something as seemingly 'unalive' as social media, a meme, or social insuburbia (new word). Live with the wisdom of simply a humble being that learns from experience, this can also make you very powerful, its paradoxical; the learning aspect is the cheat code to life and something that we learn how to optimise. Time is the re-computability of intelligence; including social intelligence. Without time, we're daily blank slates that are the property of the world around us, ready to be actively called upon with an emotional reaction, thought addiction or an affiliation at its reactionary to proactive demand. Freestylin!
