The Shadow Realm: The Cruelty of Turning Suffering into Spiritual Growth

[Yeah Yeah]

1. The fundamental problem: why must suffering become a lesson?

One of the most irritating claims in contemporary spiritual teachings is that everything that happened in the past was necessary to bring us to the present moment. We are told that our suffering made us stronger, that our mistakes were lessons, that our trauma contributed to our evolution, and that we should congratulate ourselves for everything we endured because it helped us become who we are today.

But what does this actually mean? In what demonstrable sense did the suffering make us better? Better than whom? Better than the person we might have become if we had grown up in a safe household, had supportive relationships, enjoyed financial security, and experienced love and intimacy without years of rejection and deprivation?

There is no evidence that suffering is necessary for personal development. People can learn compassion without being abused. They can develop wisdom without losing their parents. They can learn about human relationships without being exploited, humiliated or isolated. They can become capable, thoughtful and emotionally mature without spending years enduring conditions that make them miserable.

Even if someone acquires a particular insight after a terrible experience, this does not establish that the experience was necessary to acquire it. It establishes, at most, that the person found some way to respond to what happened.

The distinction is fundamental: something beneficial can emerge from suffering without the suffering itself having been beneficial, necessary or justified.

The fact that a person survives an ordeal does not prove that the ordeal improved them. The fact that they can construct a meaningful narrative around their experiences does not establish that those experiences needed to happen. And the fact that their present identity was shaped by their past does not mean that their past was the best or necessary route to that identity.

If someone survives a war, sexual abuse, homelessness, domestic violence or profound bereavement, why should they be expected to take pride in the suffering itself? They may take pride in something they accomplished despite those circumstances. They may recognise qualities they developed while trying to survive. But those are not reasons to congratulate the circumstances that hurt them.

There is a difference between being proud of surviving something and believing that the thing you survived was good for you.

2. The problem of the supposedly necessary past

The claim that everything had to happen exactly as it did because it produced the present is an example of reasoning backwards from an outcome.

The argument typically goes like this: you are who you are today; your past contributed to making you who you are; therefore, everything in your past was necessary to produce the person you are today.

But that conclusion does not follow.

Many different sequences of events could have produced a person's present characteristics. A person might have developed confidence through encouragement rather than humiliation, independence through opportunity rather than abandonment, or compassion through loving relationships rather than traumatic experiences.

We cannot observe the alternative version of a person's life in which the abuse never occurred, the family member did not die, or the years of deprivation were replaced with meaningful experiences. Consequently, we cannot confidently claim that the actual sequence of suffering was necessary to produce some supposedly superior outcome.

More importantly, even if it were necessary to produce a particular outcome, that would not automatically justify it. Necessity and moral justification are separate questions.

Suppose someone argues that a person's suffering made them more compassionate. Even if that were demonstrably true, why should the person have needed to suffer in the first place? Why should compassion have required that price? Could the same compassion have developed through less destructive circumstances?

The spiritual claim often skips these questions. It takes the fact that the past occurred and transforms it into the assertion that the past was exactly as it needed to be.

That is not an explanation. It is a comforting interpretation imposed upon an outcome after the fact.

3. The burden of endless self-improvement

A particularly troubling version of this philosophy appears in teachings that encourage people to surrender their negative emotions, stop dwelling on their past, perform shadow work, transform their unconscious patterns, and become a lighter or better version of themselves.

Some of these practices may help people understand their behaviour or manage particular emotions. The problem arises when they are presented as the universal answer to suffering.

The individual is abused, and then must heal. They experience deprivation, and then must transform their relationship with deprivation. They become depressed, and then must change their thoughts. They remain unhappy, and then must investigate what they are still doing wrong internally.

The external circumstances can remain largely unchanged while the burden of responsibility is transferred to the person experiencing them.

This creates an endless obligation. The individual must not only endure the original suffering but must also perform the additional labour of extracting growth, meaning and improvement from it.

If they cannot move forward, they are told that they remain attached to their past. If they remain angry, they have failed to surrender. If they continue to suffer, they have more healing to do. If they cannot manifest a better life, they are encouraged to examine their beliefs and expectations.

The theory can therefore become difficult to falsify. Improvement confirms that the method works; a lack of improvement becomes evidence that more inner work is required.

At what point is the individual permitted to conclude that a circumstance is simply harmful, unwanted and unjust?

Why must every experience become an assignment in personal development? Why is the person who has suffered never permitted to say, without qualification, that they wanted a better life and that what happened to them was not worth the cost?

There is no universal obligation to become a more resilient, compassionate, enlightened or productive person because one has suffered.

A person is not an unfinished moral project whose pain must be justified by the quality of the final product.

4. The cruelty of manifestation teachings

The claim that thoughts create reality introduces another problem.

There is a limited and defensible sense in which thoughts can influence outcomes. Beliefs can affect behaviour, expectations can affect decisions, and a person's mental state can influence how they respond to opportunities. But this is different from claiming that thoughts directly manifest external events or that negative thinking attracts suffering through a universal law.

Poverty has material causes. Abuse involves the behaviour of people who abuse others. Housing insecurity is influenced by economic conditions and public policy. Romantic and sexual outcomes depend on other people, circumstances, preferences and opportunities. Bereavement is not evidence that someone failed to think positively enough.

When a spiritual teaching implies that a person's thoughts determine their reality, it risks making them responsible for circumstances beyond their control.

If they are successful, they supposedly manifested success. If they remain poor, perhaps their beliefs are wrong. If they experience rejection, perhaps they are emitting the wrong energy. If they are unhappy, perhaps they are focusing on the wrong things.

The individual becomes responsible not only for their actions but, in effect, for the entire world that happens to them.

This is an especially cruel implication when applied to people who are already struggling. A person who has experienced years of deprivation is told that their negative thoughts might produce further deprivation. Their understandable response to suffering becomes another alleged cause of suffering.

The result is a double burden: first, the person suffers; then, they are told that they must regulate their thoughts correctly to avoid making the situation worse.

There is no established evidence for a universal law in which negative thoughts magically produce poverty, abuse or tragedy. Nor is there any sound reason to treat suicidal despair as a metaphysical failure that attracts punishment.

People should be allowed to describe terrible circumstances honestly without being warned that their honesty will cause the universe to retaliate.

5. The shadow realm and the gullibility of consciousness

These criticisms lead to a more fundamental philosophical question.

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that consciousness is fundamental: an original, innocent, playful and loving awareness from which the world of experience emerges.

Why would such consciousness enter a condition in which it becomes vulnerable to suffering, deprivation, confusion and death? Why would an allegedly limitless source of awareness experience itself through organisms constrained by biological needs, social competition, physical pain and mortality?

And why should the resulting experience be regarded as an expression of wisdom?

The metaphor of the shadow realm describes a possible paradox. Consciousness supplies the light through which experience becomes visible, but it becomes absorbed in the appearances it illuminates. It forgets its supposed completeness and becomes preoccupied with what it lacks. It pursues fulfilment, experiences frustration and suffering, and then constructs explanations for why those experiences were necessary.

The same consciousness that experiences the suffering becomes the narrator who explains the suffering. It creates a story in which every injury is a lesson, every loss is an opportunity for evolution, and every disappointment is part of a larger design.

But what if the explanation is itself another illusion?

What if the claim that everything happened for a reason is simply consciousness attempting to console itself within the very world whose conditions it finds unbearable?

The metaphor becomes particularly troubling when consciousness is portrayed as infinitely loving and wise but its manifestations are left vulnerable to experiences that seem profoundly indifferent to love.

Imagine a child innocently playing with something capable of causing terrible harm. The child's innocence does not make the harm less real. The child's willingness to play does not establish that the experience was necessary. And if the child forgets what happened and repeats the experience indefinitely, calling it eternal play does not automatically make it wise.

If the source of consciousness is supposedly intelligent, why would its intelligence manifest in an arrangement where its own expressions can suffer terribly without understanding why they are suffering?

Perhaps consciousness is not a single cosmic intelligence. Perhaps the universe has no intention behind it. Perhaps the idea of an infinitely loving source is itself an idealised projection. Or perhaps reality has a structure we do not yet understand.

We cannot establish the shadow-realm hypothesis as literal fact. But it raises a legitimate challenge to spiritual philosophies that claim to know why suffering exists.

The capacity to imagine a better world does not establish that the existing world is good, and the capacity to assign meaning to suffering does not establish that suffering was necessary.

6. If consciousness can imagine heaven on Earth, why accept the existing arrangement?

Human beings can imagine a world in which people retain their curiosity and playfulness throughout adulthood, in which material survival does not consume so much of life, in which meaningful relationships are more accessible, and in which people are not subjected to unnecessary violence, deprivation or humiliation.

We can imagine a society in which people have more freedom to explore, create, love and participate in life without spending most of their waking hours meeting the demands of survival.

Some aspects of such a world are achievable through technological progress, economic security, public health and social cooperation. Others remain speculative. But the ability to imagine alternatives gives us a reason to question whether the current arrangement is optimal.

Why should people be told to surrender their objections to the world rather than work to change the conditions that make their lives miserable?

There is a difference between accepting that the past cannot be changed and accepting that the conditions responsible for suffering should remain unchanged. There is a difference between recognising the limits of personal control and treating every existing limitation as cosmically justified.

A philosophy that encourages people to reinterpret their suffering can become a substitute for asking whether that suffering could have been prevented.

Sometimes the appropriate response to a harmful condition is not to become better at enduring it. It is to remove the condition, reduce its effects, or establish arrangements that make it less likely to happen to others.

That does not require a belief in manifestation, divine purpose or universal spiritual evolution. It requires only the recognition that suffering matters and that its causes can sometimes be changed.

7. History does not demonstrate that suffering automatically produces compassion

Human history also challenges the claim that suffering reliably makes people wiser or more compassionate.

People have endured wars, genocides, slavery, sexual abuse, homelessness and profound bereavement. Some have emerged with a heightened sensitivity to the suffering of others. Others have remained traumatised. Some have become fearful or distrustful. Others have inflicted suffering on people who had nothing to do with what happened to them.

Surviving an atrocity does not guarantee that a person will never commit an atrocity. Experiencing discrimination does not guarantee that someone will reject all forms of discrimination. Escaping oppression does not guarantee that someone will become sympathetic to every other oppressed group.

Suffering does not contain an automatic moral curriculum.

The same applies to political and social progress. Greater freedom or equality for one group does not automatically produce greater empathy, reciprocity or mutual respect. Those qualities require choices, social norms and institutions; they do not emerge inevitably from adversity.

If suffering were a reliable mechanism for teaching compassion, human history would provide much stronger evidence that those who experienced it consistently became less willing to inflict it on others.

Instead, history demonstrates the variability of human responses. People can learn from suffering, but they can also repeat it, rationalise it or inflict it on others.

That is why it is unreasonable to insist that suffering must have happened to teach a lesson. The lesson is not guaranteed, the development is not guaranteed, and the benefit is not guaranteed.

8. The final objection: why must I become a better person?

This is the question beneath the entire argument.

Why must suffering produce improvement? Why must a person become stronger, wiser, more compassionate or more enlightened? For whose benefit is this development required? What is the ultimate objective?

If the answer is simply that becoming a better person will make life more bearable, that may be a practical consideration, but it does not justify the suffering that preceded it. If the answer is that personal development serves a cosmic plan, then evidence is needed for the plan itself. If the answer is that suffering is valuable because it contributes to evolution, then the nature and value of that evolution must be established rather than assumed.

There is no reason to suppose that a person must become an improved version of themselves to justify their existence. Nor is there a reason to suppose that every hardship must produce a benefit.

A person can want affection without first needing to become enlightened. They can want security without needing to develop resilience through deprivation. They can want a fulfilling life without needing to transform their suffering into a spiritual achievement.

They can simply want a decent life.

And if they do not obtain it, their disappointment does not establish that they failed a cosmic lesson.

The fact that life continues to impose demands does not establish that those demands are justified. The fact that suffering exists does not establish that it serves a higher purpose. The fact that people sometimes grow after adversity does not establish that adversity is necessary for growth.

The burden of proof belongs to the person claiming that suffering is necessary, beneficial or cosmically intended—not to the person asking why they had to endure it.

Conclusion: suffering does not need to be redeemed

The central objection is not that personal growth is impossible or that people can never find meaning after adversity. It is that the possibility of growth is repeatedly used to justify suffering that was never demonstrated to be necessary.

People can learn from their past without believing that every event had to happen. They can acknowledge their survival without congratulating the circumstances that hurt them. They can change their behaviour without accepting responsibility for everything that happens to them. They can reject spiritual explanations without giving up the possibility of making practical changes.

Most importantly, they can refuse the demand that their suffering must produce something valuable.

Abuse does not need to become character development. Bereavement does not need to become spiritual evolution. Sexual deprivation does not need to become preparation for some supposedly better future. Poverty does not need to become a lesson in abundance.

Sometimes a terrible experience is simply terrible. Sometimes a loss is simply a loss. Sometimes a person is left with consequences they never wanted and cannot completely undo.

There is no demonstrated cosmic accounting system that makes every suffering necessary, balances every deprivation with a corresponding benefit, or guarantees that everyone who suffers will emerge improved.

The world does not become ethically acceptable merely because we can construct a story about why it exists.

And consciousness, if it is fundamental, does not become wise merely by experiencing the consequences of its own limitations.

The right to question suffering must include the right to reject the claim that suffering was necessary. Otherwise, the spiritual explanation becomes another demand placed upon the person who has already endured enough: not only must they suffer, they must also find a reason to be grateful that they did.

Cuz its better than nothing.

Other than that, its real simple.  As above so below/as below so above.

It's dynamic and fluid, polarities stabilize and polarities reverse.  Up dominates down but down is always working up.  Down dominates up but up is always working down.

When you're alone, omniscient, omnipotent and eternal - when you are literally God - the only thing that makes being limitless interesting is being limited.  When you can never not exist the one thing that tickles your fancy is the idea of non existence.

And just to throw it out there suffering is often the impetus for people to reach higher.

[Someone here]

I honestly don’t claim to understand that suffering is fully justified or needed for growth from the beginning.  Like , a common argument among atheists against the whole “testing “ model of religious beliefs is that “ why does god need to test humans with hardship before sending them to heaven , when he can send them to heaven directly “? .

the only peace I found with my suffering is not to contemplate it from the position of “ why would ..?”  but rather from the position that it is already an inescapable reality of this world . And since that is the case , it would contribute to more suffering if we endlessly complain about it . We need to accept that that’s how things are and we don’t know much ,let alone know everything.

Buddhism keeps it simple.   There is suffering. There is a cause of suffering.  It is possible to eliminate suffering.  There is a path available to eliminate suffering.

The new-agey talk of “suffering as a lesson”, “suffering is necessary”, and so forth is just unhelpful noise that doesn’t do anything to end the suffering.

If you aren’t suffering then don’t worry about it.  If you are suffering, there is a path to end it.
