Adobe Suite Replacement

From what I've seen this 'replacement' is pretty crap and certainly far from professional grade. It's also not being maintained at all.

@something_else

It's vibe coded in less than a day.

A pro would probably fix it in a week into production grade.

It gets worse.

AI is now being used to hack encryption secured systems.

What was stopping anyone from copying Photoshop before?

Photoshop is not great moat. Photoshop is not hard to code and there are free and cheap alternatives.

@Leo Gura

It used to be an extremely difficult and lengthy process to reverse engineer a particular software. It took developers two years to reverse engineer Super Mario 64.

With AI, time is a non issue anymore. And any software could be stolen without much effort if you're experienced.

The effort that was required to reverse engineer a particular program or game was much more than the effort required to re-create it from scratch.

Now, the required time and effort are diminished significantly.

There definitely is/was a moat. Photoshop is often used for digital designs that need converted to code. So if a client hands you that Photoshop design file to build out, you need Photoshop to see the design, access all the assets, and see all the styles. There have been many attempts to build apps that can properly render PSD files, but they were never perfect, so that forced you to pay for Photoshop.

Alternatives like Affinity Photo is good, but if you try to open a PSD file with it (a layered file that was created with Photoshop), it doesn’t load properly. PhotoCraft solves that problem.

What if this is just fascination + identity + seriousness being inflated into universal importance?

@Joshe Yes, proper reading of the PSD file format is probably the main advantage of reverse engineering Photoshop. I totally forgot about it. GIMP can read PSD but it's not the same as original.

Have you guys seen these game remixes? There is WoW + Skate 3, or have a look at Minecraft + Skyrim:

Aparently AI runs both games at once and builds a bridge with Rust ( form what I understood )

AI companies will swallow the whole digital world. There is just no way around it.

For God's sake, PhotoCraft installation is only 61.6 MB and 151 MB after installation, and it's taking only about 220 MB of RAM.

It's absolutely insane. What bloats Photoshop? Is Rust this good?

It's not at full parity yet, so that explains some of it. It already does everything I need it to. I was also using its Timeline feature to edit gifs but I've since used AI to build my own gif editor. I was also using it to import PDFs to extract design assets, but Inkscape is sufficient for that.

Even when it's near finished, it'll be much smaller and require less resources than Photoshop. I think mainly because they built it from scratch, without having to account for decades of compatibility requirements. Also, Creative Cloud bloat.
