How Does An Individualist Navigate a "Multicultural" environment?

18 posts in this topic

I live in a city in Canada where people like to stick to their own tribe (aka multi-culturalism, for the delusional retarded politicians).

There are three issues I am noticing:

1) I'm noticing I get prejudiced heavily, because people assume that since i'm of a certain ethnicity that I must think like the people from that ethnicity. Sure we can't avoid such prejudice, but its like 100x in this city, and its affecting work and daily interactions in terms of productivity and emotional stress.

2) No social norms. Many don't know North American social norms and many don't even speak English well enough. Again causing productivity and emotional stress.

3) Deconstructing reality is the ultimate individualistic pursuit, and living in such a very dated fucking tribalistic environment makes navigating daily life so much fucking worse than just being a materialistic individualist.

I don't know to live in this environment, when toxic green (delusional white leaders who love PR and sing "kumbaya"); toxic orange (typically kids of immigrants, who pursue success and status); toxic blue (recent migrants, and their kids who care about pleasing their parents); and some toxic red (recent migrants from certain parts known for posturing, maintainjng honor, etc)

The thing USA got right was emphasizing a "melting pot," rather than this retarded "multi-culturalism." Also, not just having one group dominate immigration.

Note: Many Americans living in this city feel the same way btw.

I just want advice on dealing with daily living in this environment when one is such a radical individualist, and all you see is lower levels of ego-centrism upon even lower levels of ego-centrism. I wouldn't have an issue if it didn't affect me, but when it causes so much productivity issues and social friction, you can't help but to wonder, "can this character even play survival on his own terms, when the playing field isn't even allowing him to play a different game?"

In a few moments imma imagine myself being one of the proponents of multi-cultrualism and having me met with bad fortune, whether my daughter getting raped, getting cancer, and everything that such character values. I want this multiculturalism advocate to fucking suffer the worse ever suffering a human can ever fucking experience.

Take a look on this

What connection do you see between Lasch's argument and what I wrote. Are you suggesting that the individualism I'm describing is itself a product of the same cultural conditions I'm criticizing?

Also, i'm individualistic not from the culture, but from being open to people like Leo, and other radical thinkers, who really encouraged me to start thinking and questioning things independently of others. Also because of genetics, I never had an issue siding with a stranger I just met over a family member, if they're right.

I jokingly said this to my friend, but I said I have my own culture, where I'm the only member of that culture.

I dont appreciate that you don't really propose an explicit solution to my concern. It feels like you're just saying "Oh, take a look at the mirror."

Anyways, i'm not really knee deep into mainstream politics or political issues like Palestine, Ukraine, or wahtever retardation is on the internet. I'm just focused on the issue that i am experiencing atm.

Ehh fuck all this, I don't need yalls opinion on this. Don't need anyones idea to bounce off of. Imma just contemplate the fuck outta this more -- feeling the coristol from the negative experiences I had and will have from these ignorant degenerates, and see if I come out the other end. Or not, maybe this character will just kill itself, we'll see lmao.

Opinion? It seems like concepts baby!!

So to frame it again: So you are in Canada, like perhaps like some my Canadian friends you have a no way to communicate to these ants?

There's always a time for collapse. And I think less people know may be not from the government, now particularly from the lack of trust with each other. Cliche at it sounds, the better cohesion always come from a time of intimacy. Each culture has a hidden biological clock, some cannot believe it outside than others. Abstract as it sounds it came from: way of thinking in institutions, customs of greeting, how long do you want to live in the environment in the first place. Migration motive is also undergoing, perhaps some people don't want to stay in Canada, they just want to take a shit.

Best way I have been dealing with social isolation as of late is to understand what are moments where people wouldn't criticize my own arguments. I think that's the only way to get out of this stress. To acknowledge that shocks come also in my own making sense of how weird, in how things are changing, and fit together. Honestly it's been painful process to reflect my own embarrassing moments deliberately, but I have to try to see where I don't fit with these cultures. Or else I will only explode when time is necessary for some people taking advantage of my built lack of trust in others

Hahahaha. There's no cohesion from time intimacy, when 75% of the city's population is recent migrant. I'm for immigration, BUT GOD DAMN, its too fast and too much, and also coming from only specific nations (2-3 immigrant culture dominates it), compared to NYC (Dominicans, Italians, Jamaican, Chinese, Guyanese, etc) -- It's a lot more diverse.

Also, I hate all cultures, including western ones. I've lived in a more mono-cultured part of Canada, and I hate the people there too btw. But now, living here, the frustration sky rocketed. But you can say they're the lesser of the two evils (not by much, like 99.9% vs 99.8%) because they are more open minded and individualistic, which are pre-cursors to becoming more whole.

Now I tend to hang out with the americans and some canadians living here. And suprise suprise, majority of people look at me like I'm fucking crazy, because they see me hanging out with americans, black americans, canadians, and even west africans (btw), instead of people from my own "tribe"/ethnicity. Just the eastern part of the world I don't fuck with (MENA, South Asia, East Asia, South East Asia, and some Eastern europeans), just seeing the excess collectivist values makes me wince. I seriously consider shooting myself in the head right infront of them (with a smile), just to showcase that group survival is not really that important.

What's crazy was that I was treating everybody in this city as an individual for the first year or 2. Then I realize these people can't see things without looking at it through the lens of tribalism(culture), so its frustrating. I have seen exceptions, some ethnic person exhibiting independence of mind, and i'll treat that person as an individual, but since majority are so caught up in ignorance that I have to treat em as a stereotypical person from that tribe. The criteria that I use are a combo of many of these (and most have to be present): clothing, tone of their voice, how they treat strangers, their body language, they're movement, they're eye movements, the thoughts in their head, the topics they talk about, etc...

Ultimately, it doesn't matter its all me. I sometimes remind myself that I'm doing this to myself, and that makes me self amused. I remember one person was acting condescending towards me, so I deliberately played along by talking in a "retard voice." I was laughing to myself, and he just went quiet.

Stage Orange, stage blue. ewww.

All I want is to consistently embody a life where I'm acting as if i'm the only person in this world. I can do it by meditating for long hours, before going out in public, as this literally makes no longer care if they prejudice me. I just have to meditate harder and try tripping more frequently, where I can escape the pull of acting human permanently.

I'm super close to living life in a state of not knowing, where everything is just kind a like a fractal, super consistently. Almost there, and im excited. I did it in public for 2 hours, and I was getting looks, and the looks is what pulled me back down ffs. But im almost there I promise you.

I think what you're looking for is self-esteem. You should not worry about people judging you as long as it does not lead to you judging yourself as a result. Six pillars of self-esteem by Nathaniel Branden is a gem on that topic.

If you had rock solid self-esteem and people were looking at you strangely  on the street or even worse if random people started laughing at you, you wouldn't judge yourself for 1 second. You would either think they are stupid, be really confused or laugh along with them because fuck it life can be funny why not laugh randomly.

Turned into a quick crashout.

What stands out to me is presenting yourself as an individualist who rejects tribal thinking. You reject people for categorizing you according to group identity - but then you also categorize huge numbers of people according to group identity? Stage orange, stage blue -- "ew"

There is a bit of cognitive dissonance here that might help to be deconstructed. It could be contributing to some of the emotional distress you're experiencing.

@LordFallAt work, I can't do my job effectively because many clients assume I don't speak english, so instead of asking for clarifications, they try to find someone "white," so it slows the operations down.

Also, just like you, some don't try to understand you and presume the things you're saying, but imagine the amount of presumptions they make when an ethnic tries to explain something complicated.

THis ain't just directed at yt people, but also other ethnicites as they assume I think like people from my "tribe"

I have a nuanced way of interacting with  people. If I can tell that you are exhibiting individualistic vibe, then i'll treat you like an individual. If you are obsessed with your "culture/ethnicity" then i'll treat you as such (See the whole posts, and you would've gotten this NUANCE.)

You will never be seen or understood if all you do is reflect.

Its based on experience (ie. I go out and also participate lmao). Maybe it aint as bad in Australia, but don't worry I'm not the only who feels this way about this city, a handful also feel this way, but don't have the meta-physical awareness that I do, to feel it deeeper.

But the experience you speak of - it is just one datapoint. There are many factors to consider that may be hidden. And this isn't even to speak of cognitive bias - we each filter out things we do not wish to see so we can confirm a hypothesis.

Its multiple experiences/datapoints. Different cities: large and small, and even comparing it to USA cities i've visited. Come here and you'll see what i'm talking about perhaps. This experience is not just felt by me, like I said, many Canadians feel this way too, they just don't have the awareness that I do.

It is fair to feel that way. But notice that some of the bad feeling may be due to the contradiction in rejecting others for something you also engage in yourself. While noticing that won't remove the feelings associated with strong individualism, it may help to make it more bearable
