What do guns, hijabs, and circumcision have in common?

12 posts in this topic

I've been struggled to understanding why year after year of world record-breaking gun violence, gun control is not passed in the US.

Then I realized it's the same reason circumcision, and the hijab and other ridiculous things society does continue to be done. The answer boils down to tradition. Despite the ridiculous justifications for them and the obvious harms they do, societies have a hard time dropping something that is routed in national identity.

Any thoughts? Did I miss something or get something wrong?

Other things we cling to are hot water tanks, gas cars,  and shingle roofs. The alternatives are much better in my opinion. They might cost more but last longer and are superior in every way.

Culture.

And there are so many guns in the USA that you cannot ban them all.

There so many hijabs in the middle East, there are so many circumcisors too. Doesn't mean you can't get rid of them.

What other countries have done is create incentives to give up existing guns, and ban sales of new guns. This creates a shortage and it makes it all the more difficult for those fringe crazy people to get them.

If it's illegal to have a gun parents would probably hide them better (similar to how weed was hidden better when it was illegal). Then their screen addicted, emotionally neglected, disenfranchised, disillusioned teenage son might not be able to grab it so easily.

Dude. Guns a protected by Constitution. You are just ignoring that. You are talking about changing the US Constitution to ban guns. That is possible in theory but will never happen in practice.

This is like banning rice in China. Good luck.

That's possible in practice too, but the social cost is almost unbearable, long, and laborious. ( could be done faster in 2040 though, with the army involved and something as long as a google map scanning )
But guns will just become more & more obsolete in the next 20 years.

Unless you own a swarm of automated sniper drones dictated by big-corp AI, with frequencies that can detect "iron" and probably laser your metal with automated precision. (Or just headshot you like a cheat code in a video game.)
That might happen by 2040 at scale and be easily controlled by governments.

So people with guns will definitely not do shit against police forces, firstly. (I thought the gun was supposed to allow you to fight a tyrannical state; that won't be possible anymore.) Good only for poor people fighting each other.

People in France: what's your salary? -> fuck off
People in the USA: do you have a gun? -> "none of your business" (they do lol)

Proof: Leo, do you have guns at home?

As a French person, my view is that guns don't prevent violence; they create the outcome in your brain that you can fight or shoot, so you'll have the possibility of fighting or shooting instead of running and increasing your odds of never being shot.

Most people die in gunfights when they have guns, rarely if they run away or coward out.

The idea of fighting a retard is good in theory (in practice, your odds of ending up dead are 80% higher than if you only have the possibility of running).

Interesting ya the constitution part makes it extra tricky but it's been amended in the past. But as you said already it probably has more to do with culture than anything else.

Interestingly the hijab isn't even in the Koran the way guns are in the constitution. So you are right guns have no chance of being banned.

Just curious would you want to ban guns in the US?

Increased guns in society directly cause violence. It creates the thing it supposed to protect against!

@enchanted It infringes on personal freedom.
We might as well strike a balance and ban it for people with a criminal or psychiatric record.

The more lethal weapon we have the more lethality we get in society. That's simple maths.
