On being weird

12 posts in this topic

If you aren't weird, you probably aren't acting authentic enough. There's a real desire to act goofy and irrational within us, and many people suppress that in their shadow.
If you are actually authentic, approval and conformity wouldn't be as important as expression. being weird is just part of expressing oneself.

Why is acting goofy and irrational considered wierd? You can do it in humorous way.

I don't see why acting irrational with others is more authentic then not.

I disagree. The more internal work I do on myself the more laid back I become. A lot of times when I'm out and meet someone who is really weird, it actually comes across as tryhard to me. Like, they're expending so much energy to maintain a self concept of themselves to other people instead of just being "normal" aka chill.

This is judgement

how about this version:

Weirdness can be one expression of authenticity, a sign that goofiness or irrationality, which many of us learn to suppress, is being let back out. When approval and conformity matter less than expression, weirdness often shows up naturally, simply because there's less filtering happening. Many people suppress that weirdness, often because conformity has felt safer or more rewarding than being authentic.

That doesn't mean all authentic people are weird.

in this context, consider all those the same.

If you have a tendency to act irrational, that's authentic. but not every irrational behaviour is authentic. context matters.

That's also valid. I'm not saying if you want to be authentic, you gotta be weird. I'm just saying there's a big chance you might relate to that suppression case.

that's a strawman.

seems like next time i wanna make a post, i gotta write a whole argumentative persuasive long article about it, because the casual way is vulnerable for misinterpretation and it's loose and not precise.

Most people aren't that weird normally.
