Frank Zappa deconstructs classical music elitism in 1 minute

10 posts in this topic

I've never thought about this. "So you think pop music and rock does not hold the same standards as classical music? Well, guess what? The classical music you revere so much is pop music."

Quick and succint as usual. People thought this guy had 170 IQ (not that it would be accurate or anything). "Genius is seeing things nobody else sees".

Theres a pretty big difference between classical music and pop music. Dont you think getting on the radio has a big determination on whether you are popular or not? This statement is anti genius. Borderline retarded.

The same way music is held up by media throughout the years like how we held the classical tunes that we hear this pop music is being propped up. The humans are not determining whether something is popular or not. And it has absolutely no barring on whether popular music is just better.

Why did we hear the same classical music? Cause somoene shoved it in their face and someone shoved it in that persons face. The radio plays the same songs on repeat daily. They determine the popularity of the music its just the society is literally drone like and has never searched for anything different.

Getting a song on the radio requires that you join a label and the label bribes the radio stations to play it.

Radio songs are paid for by giant corporations.

You don't get on the radio for free these days just for having a good song.

The music industry is a cartel run by a few major players. They gatekeep who gets to become popular in order to steal all their song rights. To get on the radio you have to give your song rights away to a corporation who will milk it forever while you get pennies.

The music industry is as dirty as the Devil's butthole.

When the Beatles came out, their music was an historic innovation and break from the past.  It had never been heard before.  It seems that their popularity was driven by their fans and then the public.  The music industry followed and played catch up.

Zappa was like a music critic and an amazing musician rolled into one.

I think his opinion is somewhat overstated.  From my taste over many genres I can identify the excellent albums.  He is a little too cynical sometimes.  I've never been a huge fan of classical music, but I enjoy the influence classical had on many genres and I like "third stream" Jazz which incorporates some classical components.

This is a great third stream album:

@Joseph Maynor I listened to Uncle Meat and One Size Fits All for the first time when I was 17 and I had brought two weed joints to this farmhouse in the country in the summer. Sparked one of them in the woods during midday, got super paranoid, went inside and laid down on the couch lights off in the living room and put on the music on my earsbuds. Truly out of body experience. The experimental and jammy music and weird off-the-wall samples of peculiar conversations, and of course the compositions, was like tapping into a new dimension of experience, like unlocking a new part of musical experience.
