How Would You Define Consciousness In Your Own Words?

73 posts in this topic

I often struggle to understand the meaning behind what many of you say on here when you use the words "conscious" and "consciousness".   When you say one person is more conscious than another, what do you mean by that?

Clear communication is a strong desire of mine.   So please help me understand what you mean.

@Entrepreneur Consciousness is nothing, awareness is field of experience. Without awareness, consciousness is a void of nothing that dosent even know its there. Like if at the beginning of everything there was nothing existing. Then the nothing became aware that it was nothing existing. Consciousness just existed forever but its not always aware that its there existing. Without awareness there is no consciousness (theoretically cause it cant know its there it is still there just not aware that its there) and without consciousness there is no awareness.

So a person who is more conscious than another is more "nothing" than the other person?   I am no clearer on what that means.

What does it mean when one person is more conscious than another?

@EntrepreneurYes when you become more conscious you stop using ego to pretend you exist. When you are conscious there are no people thats a mind game of the ego. A less conscious person is caught up in their heads narrative a more conscious person is full paying attention to whats happening in front of them at all times.

IE your wife is divorcing you and you are at work still thinking about your wife divorcing you. A more conscious person would be at work fully when they are at work. When you fraction yourself off like that you make more mistakes and life gets worse.

Essentially a more conscious person is dreaming better than the less conscious person. When you wife divorces you in your dream and then she leaves and go about your dream you dont keep thinking your wife is divorcing you you completely change scenery and stop thinking about it and engage with the other things that are happening.

Some people will get insulted by someone and think about it all day, when it was a 5 second thing. Instead of ignoring it they dwell on it and get more and more upset/angry about it missing opportunities and beauty of the day. If someone insults a conscious person they will laugh and forget it ever happened.

You experience these states every single day looping. Pure conciousness then awareness and then ego.

A pure concious person gets severely fucked over in this society cause they are living in the moment while everyone else is living in ego. They will get beat down and beat down and beat down till they are forced into living in ego. Then they will see something is severely wrong here and want to kill themselves.

@Hojo

Like your description

@Entrepreneur I would say: A more "conscious" person is more aware of the existence of ... consciousness :P

So you get more aware of what exists, and you get more aware that you are aware.

So, let's see if that created more confusion:D

Here are smart words that present my apparent identity but don't mean anything. At all.

Google tells me this

Quote

Consciousness is the state of being aware of oneself and one's surroundings, encompassing subjective experiences like thoughts, sensations, emotions, and the sense of self

Google's description is how I have always thought about it.

You guys are making me think that the words "conscious" and "consciousness" are the wrong words for what you are trying to describe.

@Hojo Seems like you are describing a belief.  A belief that humans don't really exist and that you are just an invisible puppet master controlling the strings of a marionette.  Like the invisible and spiritual wizard of Oz behind the curtain.   Is this what you mean?   Being more conscious means adopting that belief?

@theleelajoker So a conscious person is just more aware?   Why not use the words "more aware" in place of consciousness then?  Wouldn't that make for a clearer understanding?  Or does it mean something else?

Think about your mother right now in your head. Can she exist while shes not in the room? You can have a conversation with her and she will act like how she acts and you can talk to her. What you think you are is the exact same thing. You dont exist you are a hallucination. Yes you literally have no free will, your soul is controlling your body from a different dimension. When you go with the flow you will realize that the words that come out of your mouth arent being said by you. If you become more concious you will say a word and realize you didnt say it something else said it.

Definitions are arbitrary, the words are interchangable.

I think of function. Something that is, and something that obseves what is.

Okay.  So being more conscious means adopting the belief that I don't exist and that I am hallucinating?

So a person who is more conscious means that they have adopted this belief?

@EntrepreneurNo you do exist just not what you think you are, you arent the voice in your head and you arent the body. They do move like a marionette the same way your dream character moves like a marionette. Controlled by what? Whos your dream character controlled by?

You dont adopt a beleif you just realize thats whats happening. You drop the beleif you created that you are controlling.

Words have meaning; otherwise, why use them at all?

I am trying to get at what people here mean when they use those words "conscious" and "consciousness".

If there is something that is and something that observes what is, then what is "consciousness" or being "conscious" in relation to that?

@Nemo28 Your explanation doesn't help.

So a person who is more conscious than another is simply a person who has abandoned more beliefs in more things until they reach a place of not believing anything at all?

Conscious means you are paying attention to whats happening right now, consciousness is the base of your existence.

@EntrepreneurYes then you will see you arent controlling anything. Cause you stop narrating but keep moving. One second you are sitting there the next you are in the grocery store getting food thinking how did I get here. Then you drop thinking how did i get here.

Now you are really concious, you are entering dream mode.

Ok.  So being conscious means being more focused on the present moment?  So a person who is more conscious than another is simply more focused on the present moment than the other person he is being compared to?

And then "consciousness" is a state of spiritual existence?

Are these descriptions accurate in your view?

@EntrepreneurConsciousness is happening right now, the state of deep sleep is happening right now. Close your eyes what do you see?A brain dead void sitting there. Thats consciousness. reality is happening inside your consciousness. The spiritual experience is happening right now. Conciousness dosent stop or go away ever its the basis of your existence.

Look behind your eyes theres nothing there. The spiritual existence is happening alongside a dream which is another spiritual experience of the void of nothing.

Your dreams show you how to live consciously. Your dream is being created by your conciousness.

Concious = living like you do in a dream

Conciousness = the base reality of the dream.

The more you bring ego( self reflection) out of the picture the more spiritually you live.

Time is imaginary. There is no past, present or future.

Same with people.

All that is and will ever be, God is.

I find it amazing that a word like consciousness exists. It's like a fish describing water. We pretend we all think we know what "consciousness" refers to. But it's a completely relative notion, not absolute.  I'd say that there's several different definitions floating around: the sensations of experiencing, the awareness of existence, the awareness that you as a person exists, and a more general "knowledge" of the world and how it works. All of which causes no end of confusion.
