Exactly, there is not much you can do when it's -40°C outside.

Neither with 40°, like in Spain.

I'm from Canada myself and lived in Toronto where this fakeness and materalism you speak of is even more prevalent.

I think you're a bit naive about how the world works though and things and money are more important than random authentic relationships. The authentic experience of being human is struggling and scarcity so if you wanna bond over that with people there's plenty of people willing to do that.

If you're not a serious and motivated person than it's gonna be hard to enjoy a city like Toronto. Banff is a tourist city so it's mostly gonna be young hedonism and old people so it's not a great place to socialize either.

"say nothing at all if you got nothing nice to say"

Maybe it is fear of confrontations? Some kind of collective social caution?

Hi, born & raised Ukrainian here. I've been living in Canada for almost 4 years and I would like to share my perspective on life here. I lived mostly in 2 provinces: Ontario (Toronto) and Alberta (Banff & Calgary). I work in a luxury hotel so my work involves a lot of communication with people. Let’s start with the things that I love about Canada:

1. You can meet people from everywhere (especially India & China).

2. You can be who you are (nobody cares about what you wear, what you believe, what is your sexual orientation, what are your family plans, etc.)

3. Minimal corruption (compared to my country).

4. Living conditions are good (even if you don’t earn that much).

5. It’s easy to fulfill your basics needs (food & shelter).

6. It’s safe (mostly).

Now let’s get to the things that I can’t handle and why I’ll be moving.

1. Fakeness and inability to be intimate or direct presented as politeness (empty conversations).

2. Artificiality as the core of personality in people (identities build around entertainment, social media, celebrities).

3. Obsession with things, career growth and success.

4. Addictions.

5. Housing cost.

6. Cold weather.

I've noticed something similar. Most Western countries are the same with some exceptions. I think what it is, is a lack of reality. When you create a safety net, barrier or "bubble" around reality so people can live in basically a false reality of handshakes, polite words and Starbucks...something in the human can't function. If society isn't setup in a way that admits the natural state of the human condition and tries to make it some kind of politically correct padded cel it can eventually drive you a bit nuts. As I'm becoming more conscious of certain things now as a young adult I'm starting to think "how did I survive 20 years of this?" If the dogs are hungry, feed them.
