I'm from Canada myself and lived in Toronto where this fakeness and materalism you speak of is even more prevalent. 

I think you're a bit naive about how the world works though and things and money are more important than random authentic relationships. The authentic experience of being human is struggling and scarcity so if you wanna bond over that with people there's plenty of people willing to do that. 

If you're not a serious and motivated person than it's gonna be hard to enjoy a city like Toronto. Banff is a tourist city so it's mostly gonna be young hedonism and old people so it's not a great place to socialize either.
