Is Truth More Fundamental than Consciousness?

I had this thought while watching Leo's video and reading this quote from Ramana maharshi 

"Only that which existsts in deep, dreamless sleep is real."

Is this pure Truth, which appears to simply be Nothingness, more fundamental than consciousness / experience? Or is Truth itself an experience?
