Coaching Mastery

8 posts in this topic

I've been practicing Life coaching for around 6 months now - all free peer coaching sessions, or pro-bono sessions.

I have exclusively positive feedback - which is a problem, because to improve I would benefit from a critical perspective.

I believe the exclusively positive feedback is because my peers and clients also wouldn't necessarily know what to critique!

6 months in. I'm definitely not a perfect coach.

What are some meaningful metrics/feedback loops I can put in place to ensure I am progressing in my mastery journey as a coach?

What data do I need to be seeing to acertain whether I am TRULY delivering quality coaching?

It sounds like what you're looking for is a mentor coach. Might be a bit pricey but something to look into.

There are also groups / masterminds who do this as well that you can join, with more experienced coaches. (One person gets coached, the others give feedback.)

Otherwise self reflection exercises can help. Looking at the ICF markers of the core competencies and sitting down after each session you do to check how well you did on all of them. (+What you could improve / what went well etc.).

When I coach people I can clearly see and feel my own lack.

I can ask myself at the end of each session, "How could I have asked better questions?"

Hiring a skilled coach to coach you will also show you all their best techniques and tricks. I learned a lot by being coached by skilled coaches with lots of experience.

I have been coaching for the last 7 years now. The best ways are to work with your own coach ( a great one) and continue doing different trainings that hold a lot of rigour for your own transformation and skills. ❤️

@Leo Gura I’m gonna start reading the life coaching books you have on your booklist.
What are some of the traps to avoid and how do you recommend I get started? I’m a licensed therapist, but I mainly want to get involved in coaching to have more freedom since being a therapist, I cannot practice out of the state I’m licensed in. I think I already have sufficient training and now I just need to create a website and market myself to get clients.

“Our most valuable resource is not time, but rather it is consciousness itself. Consciousness is the basis for everything, and without it, there could be no time and no resource possible. It is only through consciousness and its cultivation that one’s passions, one’s focus, one’s curiosity, one’s time, and one’s capacity to love can be actualized and lived to the fullest.” - r0ckyreed
