Struggling with my Bachelor's thesis

50 posts in this topic

Hi:) quick update.

i spoke with my professor yesterday. she was really nice and encouraging and told me that it sounds like i've thought things through very thoroughly.

my thesis claim stands (thank God!), but now i'm left with the task of deciding on a structure and it's creating a lot of anxiety and rumination.

i could either go

Intro

Novel 1

 - theme a

 - theme b

 - theme c

Novel 2

 - theme a

 - theme b

 - theme c

Conclusion

Or

Intro

Theme A

 - Novel 1

 - Novel 2

Theme B

- Novel 1

- Novel 2

Theme C

 - Novel 1

- Novel 2

Conclusion

....roughly like that.

i don't like how i'm supposed to make a decision here, especially because there isn't a right or wrong way to do this. my brain would like it very much if i could figure out that one way of structuring my text is "wrong" and the other is "right" and all i have to do is figure out which is which. but that's not the case...they could both work out just fine...so i could just pick either...but i can't because i'm still anxious and overthinking this to the t.

@CARDOZZOBachelor's degree lol

Oh, really? Do you call thesis when doing a bachelors degree? I didn't know that.

Here in Brazil, we have a unique name for it called "TCC (Trabalho de Conclusão de Curso)" or Degree's Conclusion Project.

@Judy2 Hey Judy!

Not sure where you’re at deadline wise but just saw this post now and thought I’d share something you might find useful :).

 https://www.phrasebank.manchester.ac.uk/

I’ve linked you an academic phrase book. Folks can use the phrases to potentially help them write in a more smooth and competent manner. Can help avoid the otherwise tedious process of having to keep coming up with academic language to convey your points in. I know myself I used to get kind of anxious about how to phrase things back when I was in university :).

Anyways, hope this helps! And all the best with your thesis!

The book Getting What You Came For has practical advice on how to write thesis and dissertations. I don’t have any experience, but if I was you, I would find a time and place to show to write and then spend time breaking it up into sections and writing one section at a time.

“Our most valuable resource is not time, but rather it is consciousness itself. Consciousness is the basis for everything, and without it, there could be no time and no resource possible. It is only through consciousness and its cultivation that one’s passions, one’s focus, one’s curiosity, one’s time, and one’s capacity to love can be actualized and lived to the fullest.” - r0ckyreed

When doing strategy, I collect tons of notes, ideas worth considering, ideas that should get implemented, knowledge that I must retain, ideas to follow up on, the best jargon, terms and phrases for important pieces, on and on.

When it’s time to put it all together into a single, cohesive understanding or an action plan, the sheer volume of information is daunting. When looking back at my 10,000 ft wall of ideas, I often think: did I miss anything, how does it all connect, I’m going to miss important things because the volume is too much, etc.

So, trying to figure out how to wrangle complexity causes me anxiety too. I think it’s normal actually. Most people avoid complexity for this very reason.

No solutions to offer, just a perspective. You’ll do great!
