Informative article on cancer rates increasing in young people and possible reasons...

Adults in the prime of their lives, often otherwise outwardly healthy, are dying of aggressive cancers that appear to develop more quickly and be more deadly than in the past, for reasons that scientists cannot adequately explain.

Clinicians have especially been noticing a rise in cancers in the gastrointestinal (GI) system — including colorectal, kidney, and pancreatic cancers — in adults younger than 50, the cutoff for what is usually considered early-onset cancer.

Scientific authorities around the world see this as one of the most pressing questions for modern medicine and are now funding an ambitious, globe-spanning research project to provide some desperately needed answers.

Part of that is certainly that we've become better at screening and catching it much earlier and also that people are now more actively seeking medical assessment, especially men.

But part of that is increased stress in younger people compared to previous generations who had a lot of things taken care of for them by the government. The average 30-year old couple can no longer afford their own house without becoming tied to a bank under riddiculopusly expensive 45 year mortgage. They struggle more and more with paying bills, they don't have time to cook so they get shitty food through deliveries, they don't exercise because they are always tired. They have sedentary jobs that keep them glued to their chairs for 8-12 hours a day. They spend additional 3 hours watching TV. All that stress is medicated through innocent alcoholism (half a bottle of vine daily to calm the nerves), vaping, smoking etc.

Now add a child into the mix and your immune system is effectively down by 30% pretty much all the time.

Plus add the cocktail of air pollution, unfiltered water, chemicals, pesticides, microplastics, mould etc etc.

Smoking and obesity are by far the biggest drivers of cancer, with plenty of kids smoking out there, based on how many times I've been asked to buy cigarettes and vapes outside of gas stations/stores. additionally, pretty much every chronic disease will increase cancer possibility, e.g. diabetes.

By smoking you are increasing your chance of lung cancer by a massive amount, and it just so happens that the chances of surviving lung cancer specifically are pretty low compared to skin cancer for example which you are more likely to survive than not.

It's ludicrous that we are still struggling with cancer in 2024, the solution is not chemical, all we have to do is invent a universal scanner that finds cancer the same way a doctor would, and basically scan yourself once/twice a month, It wouldn't get rid of cancer 100% but it would drop the chances of dying from most cancers significantly.

Here we are, arguing about which food is healthier, indigestion and phytic acid won't increase your chances of cancer or any disease, ever. Hilariously enough, phytic acid helps cancers die instead of spread. Welcome to nutrition science.

I’ve drank contaminated tap water for a couple decades. Found out it’s been contaminated with PFOS chemicals. Wonder if I’ll get cancer next! :S

A major cause is that most of the the food we consume contains microplastics.

Researchers at the Ocean Conservancy and University of Toronto tested 16 protein types, including seafood, poultry, pork, beef, tofu, and three plant-based meat alternatives, and found that 88 percent of them contained microplastics. This number was much higher than expected.

"Seafood has traditionally been a big focus of scientific research, but we are starting to see it is not just a problem limited to the ocean," said researcher Madeleine Milne, who conducted the study while at the Rochman Lab at the University of Toronto.

Research has shown a correlation between plastic and high cancer rates.

Could be anything really... microplastics, pesticides, drug use, smoking, eating lots of charred and burnt meat, pollutants in our food supply, stress.

Personally I believe the main driver is obesity. They should measure the BMI of everyone getting these diseases. Our level of bodyfat is unprecedented compared to any time in evolutionary history.  Also, many more people used to smoke in the past than they do now.  My grandmother lived until 85 smoking 2 packs a day and she was never a person I would call "playful" either though she craved drama and worked hard.  She was thin and stayed generally active despite her smoking.

Genetics has a role, letting people breed who have sub-optimal genetics because we want to be compassionate, the society of coddling people, but mostly it's people are fat and don't move. It's really that simple.  Anyone who chews tobacco is at enhanced risk of cancer of the mouth and throat as chewing tobacco is FAR worse than smoking it. Every single person I've known who is a long time chewer develops precancerous growths in their mouth... so if you are reading this, don't be a fucking idiot... stop chewing tobacco. Smoke it if you must.

The synthetic polymer problem is not really anything anyone has really thought about yet... it's not just microplastics in food, but on clothing and fabrics that doesn't just end up as dryer lint, but often ends up in the air. There's no easy solution to this.  Where I work I breathe in a cellulose based fiber called "lenzing" as part of my job... I often wonder if it's bad for me long term and I should find a different machine to work on.

"Lenzing™ fibres are man-made from natural wood cellulose molecules derived from renewable sources and are eco-consciously manufactured with innovative and sustainable processes. At the end of their lifecycle, Lenzing™ fibres are fully biodegradable."
