Why aren’t the Trump tax cuts getting reversed if it’s a deeply unpopular law?

9 posts in this topic

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like any of the Trump tax cuts will be reversed because of Sinema and Republicans. Biden and the Democrats in Congress might passed a tax law that closes the loopholes for corporate minimum tax. Other than that, we are going to have to wait for the tax cuts for the wealthy to expire in the next few years. Though that would be it.

But right wing policies are always unpopular with the majority of Americans like Leo said “The simple fact is that right-wing policies are just not popular. Majority of Americans don't want far right policies enacted. And if they are ever enacted they will work so poorly that they will have to be revoked soon enough.” Even legitimate polls out there show that the Trump tax cuts turned out to be deeply unpopular.

So why haven’t there been enough people and politicians who want to eliminate these disastrous tax cuts?

Because corporations fund most of the Dems and Republicans.

Corporate influence goes way beyond just the right-wing.

I kinda thought that, but you’re saying that corporations could then get away with influence politicians to pass other kinds disgusting laws to be passed like as repealing Obamacare, repealing civil rights, anti gay work laws, etc.?

Also, how come most corporate Dems, especially everyone in democratic leadership for increasing taxes on the wealthy and corporations in as many ways possible?

How much longer will the people be willing to put up with this kind of devilry?

Corporations are not some monolith. They have competing interests and agendas, and they don't control politicians like dogs on a chain. It's more loose than that.

1) I don't think it's true most corp Dems want to increases taxes much.

2) Politicians are influenced by money. Which means, they have some set of ideals and then money gets them to do otherwise or to "compromise".

Ah, I see.

So, they don’t have that much control over politicians because there are too many corporate donors and lobbyists that each of your typical politicians are funded by and each of these megadonors and megalobbyists don’t have the exact same agendas, goals, and desires as each other. Instead, a lot of times each of them actually try to outcompete or counter each other’s proposals for that same politician.

Actually, now that this is making more sense to me, there have been some wealthy donors like Bezos, Buffett, and Soros who have clearly announced their support for higher corporate taxes. Even the American oligarch, Bloomberg, who undoubtedly has been one of the largest corporate donors for many big name politicians in the country, thought that the Trump tax cuts was a terrible mistake for the country and has urged Washington to raise the corporate taxes and taxes for the wealth back to what they were before.

Also, come to think of it, regarding social policies that are neither economic or business related, probably most corporate lobbyist have either:

a) never really cared about them as long as they don’t interfere with their economic or business agenda

or

b) perhaps genuinely support some amount of liberal policies, but with some kind of “corporate compromise.”

But during both the Clinton and Obama eras, the Democrats had pushed for and successfully some significant tax increases on corporations and rich. That’s why we had a balanced budget in the 90s and Obamacare had the individual mandate tax.

Also, Biden, Harris, Pelosi, Schumer, even Manchin, and almost every other Democrat in Congress have been earnestly constantly trying as hard as they can to increase the taxes on the rich and corporations to some significant degree.

Just pay your fair share, man.

Nevermind all those loopholes in the tax law where we've literally legalized ways for rich people to pay little/no taxes. No need to reverse them and remove the laws off the books. That would actually fix the problem.

Why make it mandatory? Let's just leave it up to corporations to do the right thing and pay their fair share, man. Surely slight social pressure while continuing to do business with them will make them voluntarily give up billions of free dollars, right?

Please tell me that you’re joking.

Another thing I'd like to mention here is that, I now realized another reason why the majority of those in Congress, including all of the Republican and some of the most right-wing corporate Democratic congressmen, aren't pushing seriously hard for any kind of tax raises at all, is perhaps because not there still isn't enough people in this country who have gotten angry about what the Trump Tax cuts did.

The Trump tax cuts actually did somewhat provide tax relief for all the lower-middle class, the middle class, and the upper-middle people throughout the entire country. So because of that along with the fact most US citizens are sadly too uninformed, still too much favor of the status quo American capitalism, and probably got convinced by all of the anti-tax hike corporate lobbying advertisements out there, most Americans constituents perhaps still think to some extent that the tax cuts might not have been the worse that has happened.
