Green Scandinavia?

9 posts in this topic

I often hear Scandinavia cited as having strong green (SD) values. From the little I know about this area and having visited once, it seems clear to me that their societal values are green (safety net, free college, free medical, the prison system, conservation etc).

Does anyone know about their interpersonal culture though and other lines of development and whether they are also green? Do they share the #metoo culture there and similar green memes? Do they prioritize interpersonal feelings over logic in their relationships as do many green sub-cultures in America? Do they have a spiritual green culture? What green spiritual teachers or green / integral thinkers have come out of this area?  I'd love to hear any and all information on these topics.

Thank you!

Hey Derek!

Im not from scandinavia, but I am from a Nordic country. I hope that suffice ;)

When it comes to interpersonal culture, I would say that Helsinki in Finland is most "advanced" In this sense. "Big" cities in Finland are generally more tolerant to minorities and have more openly gays. Queers live mostly in Helsinki where they are more accepted.

There is very little open racism or homophobia in Finland (excluding internet) and it manifests in a lot of talk, very little action. However, when someone in the minority group, especially muslims, get into scandals like there was Turku's stabbing or Oulu's childrape ring, racism towards those minorities then manifest in ways like looks on the street and avoiding to talk to them. Source: My muslim friend and co-worker.

We do share #MeToo culture and I wouldn't call it "memeing" but a fucking witch hunt which sent our greatest movie director of all time to depression and killed his career.

And yes I am butthurt of that.

When it comes to relationships, I cant speak for Helsinki but I can speak for other "big" cities like Tampere and Oulu. Sadly the way men deal with problems in relationships is still very masculine, while female's way of dealing with problems is still very feminine. So no, they dont prioritize interpersonal feelings over logic. Helsinki could be different tho

When it comes to spiritism, we are just now getting over the "young atheist" phase. Cultural spiritism was deemed paganism when Christianity came. I doubt spiritism is popular even in Helsinki yet. I cant think if a single spiritual teacher from Finland.

I'd say the elderly are more on the stage blue, they are the ones that built the socialist values in Finland while the younger population is more on the orange and would love more capitalism. The young people are also bitter that the elderly paid practically zero of their own pensions and now the young people have to pay up what they didn't.

Well, that was my 2 cents. Hope it helped!

@Hansu https://yle.fi/uutiset/osasto/news/finnish_film_director_accused_of_subjugating_humiliating_actors/10122808

If a film director is accused of subjugating and humiliating actors, then most film directors can be accused at any time soon.

Directors are generally known for treating actors harshly.

Directors push actors harshly out of love for their movies.

Rather than accusing directors for their harsh treatments, it's better to make them love actors, too.

One of the most ridicilous accusations were that the female actresses were forced to spend 2 weeks in forest without showers etc as a sign of misogny. This was one 2 week period while the male actors spent more periods, one of them lasting over 2 months and somehow they made this classify as "misogny"

Legal action against the people who made this shit up is still going, however nothing can repair the damage done.

Honestly I feel like they wanted to kickstart #metoo in Finland by naming someone big but they did it in horrific way.

Edit: As we agree to agree, lets not hijack more of this thread.

This is why I don't take misogyny seriously. It's like labeling anyone you don't like a troll.

Muslims boycott toilet papers because they contained a pattern that looks like the word "allah". I don't take allah seriously, either.

You cannot take every fool seriously.

Perhaps, actresses need more love for directors.

I come from Norway.

Norwegians are strongly preoccupied with what is going on in the US, and I personally feel that I have a pretty good sense of what is going on over there just by watching the news. So yeah, #metoo has definitely been a topic among people over here, but it's generally considered a more American phenomena. We haven't really had any "metoo" incidents here in Norway as far as I can tell. I personally think it's pretty lame, and I know many of my peers agree with me.

In the education system we are taught very Green values, and most people are very tolerant towards other ethnicities. Norway is very humanitarian country and that is something most Norwegians are very proud of. We know that our countries are a bastion of human development and we enjoy all the international attention we can get (maybe due to our small size and historical insignificance). Just look in the comment section in any YT-video about Norway, lol.

Norwegians tend to be quite inhibited, and I think part of that is due to the preoccupation we have to how other people perceive us. I think most Norwegians feel a certain restriction from self-expression, because it's not really normal to express yourself fully. So you will find that most Norwegians are very humble and nice, but that they at the same time can be quite hard to get to know below the surface. And I think that's exactly why we are so eager on the partying side. It's an opportunity to express ourselves fully, and get to know each other on a deeper level. All that without the fear of social repercussions. It's an opportunity to take risks socially, something which unfortunately is scarce outside of the partying setting.

I don't know any Norwegian spiritual teacher, but "Snåsamannen" is probably the most famous "mystic" in Norway. You also have Princess Märtha Louise, who has been talking about angels and stuff and is now in a relationship with a shaman (to many Norwegians' dismay). I don't really care though. But yeah, the spirituality we have over here is quite Green and not very sophisticated.

That' s very interesting. So it sounds from what you're saying that Norway has a lot of green values but perhaps has not integrated orange (self-expression etc) as strong as the US.

I've visited Denmark and what you're saying rings true for there as well.
